CARE Impact Partners (CIP), the advisory services arm of CARE International, combines the power of CARE with the rigor and business acumen of a management consulting practice. CIP draws on CARE’s presence in 100 countries, our global network of technical experts and influencers across sectors, and seven decades of experience in humanitarian and development work to provide evidence-based support to companies that are building resilient enterprises, delivering social impact and seeking to improve their reputation with customers, employees, value-chain partners and the wider world. CIP delivers impact to our corporate partners through three primary services lines: 1) Value Chains, 2) Gender, Equity & Diversity and 3) Impact Advisory Services.

The Sustainability Manager (SM) position is essential to delivering excellent client service and growing CIP’s practice, with a particular focus on building gender equity frameworks into multinational value chains and coherently integrating the social and environmental aspects of clients’ corporate sustainability strategies. The SM will liaise day-to-day with clients (predominantly global companies headquartered in Europe or Asia), manage projects that include engagement teams across CARE’s global network, ensure high quality and timely execution of deliverables, and help drive business development and learning. They will also manage a Sustainability Associate and intern cohorts. The SM will be allocated approximately 65% to client projects, 15% to building the practice, and 20% to people management.

Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day execution of client projects: manage work-streams, closely track progress against objectives, highlighting roadblocks as soon as they arise and taking full personal ownership for high-quality, timely execution of deliverables; gather and analyze information, formulate and test hypotheses, translate research into recommendations for client presentations and draft project deliverables; drive internal coordination with the globally dispersed CARE team and external consultants; organize and execute on farm and in factory field visits in client value chains to collect primary data and collaborate directly with project stakeholders; provide strategic communications guidance to clients to help them communicate the value of their corporate sustainability work with CIP.
  • Business Development, Learning and Practice-Building: support business development through research and proposal development; conduct research across all service lines to ensure CIP strategies evolve in alignment with sector innovations; expand a growing internal database of tools, templates, research, and case studies; format client deliverables and case studies for use as marketing and training materials and use lessons to refine service offerings and processes.
  • People management: onboard, train, and manage Sustainability Associates and Sustainability Analysts (SAs); provide SAs with ongoing directional guidance, feedback, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of project management experience and knowledge of complex organizational structures
  • Knowledge of techniques and tools of project management and examples of demonstrable impact in the delivery of a project
  • 2-3 years of people management experience
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects/priorities and deliver high quality outcomes under pressure
  • A robust understanding of international development strategies and multinational value chains (and, ideally, a theoretical and/or practical understanding of how they relate)
  • The requisite enthusiasm and competence for conducting short-term fieldwork in value chains, both on farm and in factory
  • Strong strategic problem-solving skills
  • A high level of personal initiative
  • The ability to work well in a distributed, multicultural, fast-paced environment
  • A bachelor’s degree is ideal, a Master’s degree is preferable, but we know that life is complicated and we are interested in you as a whole person
  • A strong understanding of multinational supply chains (on farms, in factories, or ideally both) is essential for the role. Experience with social (i.e., human rights; labour rights) and/or environmental sustainability in supply chains is strongly preferred
  • Experience in the private sector or the development-sector working with the private sector is critical. If you have different experience, please tell us how that might help you in bridging these sectors in our work
  • Experience on gender issues in some substantive form – ideally in a value chain context – is imperative
  • Creativity, self-direction, and collaboration are all essential
