POSITION SUMMARY:

HIAS seeks a Support Circle Coordinator to assist in the oversight of the pilot Community Sponsorship project designed specifically for asylum seekers. They will maintain comprehensive and updated program guidelines, learning materials and resource lists, arrange and facilitate training, and provide support and guidance to community groups sponsoring asylum seekers. The position will work closely with HIAS’ Legal Services department and Resettlement & Integration department to ensure compliance with HIAS’ Community Sponsorship policies, assist with the application approval and screening processes, and coordinate integration and collaboration with the legal and social services programs.

Note, this is a part-time, temporary position that works 17.5 hours/week, starting ASAP and ending 1 year later.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports the expansion of existing HIAS Community Sponsorship programming to include asylum seekers in the DC and NY metropolitan areas.
  • Develops and distributes promotional material, assists with the recruitment of Community Sponsorship participants and the screening/selection of beneficiaries.
  • Maintains and distributes educational materials, including guidelines, handbooks, resources and training materials, and adapts as necessary to ensure they reflect specific needs of asylum seekers and those supporting them.
  • Develops and facilitates in-person and/or virtual training opportunities for community groups sponsoring asylum seekers.
  • Liaises between Community Sponsor groups and asylum seekers to address any issues or concerns and maintain adherence to expected timelines and outcomes.
  • Supports community sponsors through the provision of office hours, consultations, regular follow-up and problem-solving as needed.
  • Maintains and updates resources and identifies and supports community partnerships to enhance support of asylum seekers and community sponsor groups.
  • Coordinates the integration and collaboration of the Legal Services Community Sponsorship pilot with the Legal Services department and the Resettlement & Integration department at HIAS.
  • Participates in regular meetings with Resettlement & Integration and Legal Services teams, and with other HIAS sponsorship groups supporting refugees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree strongly preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience working in a non-profit environment, preferably with the refugee/asylee/asylum-seeking community (may include internships and volunteer experience).
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Experience overseeing and supporting volunteers preferred.
  • Knowledge of refugee resettlement and/or asylum process and trauma-informed care (TIC) preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to work with clients from a range of backgrounds with sensitivity to culture, trauma history, age and other vulnerabilities.
  • Organized, thorough and efficient work ethic; ability to work independently while also as part of a collaborative team.
  • Occasional weeknight and weekend service provision.
  • Travel, to include travel to insecure operating environments, may be required.
