Overview of position:
In line with our client corporate efforts to streamline environmental & social sustainability measures in its operations, the Sustainable Supply Chain Team (SSC) in the Supply Chain Strategic (SCOE) branch based in their Head Quarters (HQ), seeks to create a sustainable warehousing guidebook for their field practitioners.
Under the supervision of the sustainable supply chain team in the SCOE branch the consultant will develop the necessary technical guidance on sustainable warehousing. The incumbent will consult with other teams in SCOE branch (e.g. country capacity strengthening team) & relevant HQ units within Supply Chain Division (SCO), in particular the logistics branch (e.g. field supporting unit, R&D team) as well as with relevant units outside the supply chain divisions such as the energy efficiency program (management & services division) & gender equality office (program & policy development department).
The incumbent will also interact with country offices to ensure feedback from users are taken in consideration while developing the guidelines.

Job purpose:
The Sustainable Supply Chain (SSC) unit envisions a future where our clients Supply Chain (SC) is carbon neutral for its regular operations & strives towards neutrality when responding to extraordinary events, with a positive impact on the natural environment of people, communities & governments they serve. To this end, the sustainable warehousing guidebook will be the part of a broader collection of technical guidance that places environmental & social sustainability at the center of our clients supply chain regular tasks & procedures. The sustainable warehousing guidebook is meant for both Head of Supply Chains for strategic decision making, for Logistics Officers to provide them with feasible SOP to include sustainability concerns in their work & for Engineers to ensure the warehouses’ infrastructure reflects sustainable activities & practices that will need to be carried out. The proposed approach to the technical guidance is to consider the following elements:
Environmental impacts, such as GHG emissions & clean energy, waste, water & wastewater, biodiversity & air pollution in different stages such as when constructing (or rehabilitating) a warehouse, while using it, when disposed (in case of temporary structures such as MSUs).
Social impacts, ensuring safety, ensuring infrastructures allows diversity & Inclusion activities & ease the prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV), guaranteeing a heathy work environment & others.
This work will feed into other ongoing sustainability projects led by SSC, into supply chain regional environmental strategies as well as into future / ongoing update of logistics guidance led by other SCO units.

Accountabilities & responsibilities are to complete the project the following task are required:
Propose technical guidance structure & format with the HQ & wider team (content presentation, best use of case studies, visual elements, etc.).
Work with the wider team to develop a detailed categorization of profiles of initiatives & good practices to support potential new standardization of equipment & procedures for warehousing activities.
Draft the technical guidance ensuring that sustainability aspects are covered in the different warehousing dimensions such as structure set up & lay out (temporary, semi temporary, permanent, local construction, etc.), materials used to build the facility, warehousing equipment, warehouse management (procedures) & external warehouse surroundings.
Establishing metrics to enable decision making based on sustainability parameters at early stage (e.g. what are the impacts of choosing to build a temporary versus a semi temporary warehouse).
Support the establishment of metrics, type of benchmarks & KPIs to report progress against adopting sustainability measures in warehousing over time.
Review background materials & equipment, including but not limited to, our clients (COs, UNHRD, etc.) & other published research products in relation to warehousing activities & best sustainability practices.
Liaise with COs & relevant experts in house to gather information through one on one discussions (online / in person) as well as engaging with external stakeholders that have warehousing & sustainability expertise best practices from the wider logistics industry.
Design graphics & include photos & drawing enhance & support reporting narrative, especially for the structure set up & lay out of a warehouse.
Create annexes to the guidelines to include technical & financial information that serve for future partnerships exchanges & fundraising among others.
Edit & finalize the sustainable warehousing guidebook by integrating any feedback from HQ SCO / HQ engineering unit / COs / FOs / UNHRD / partners ensuring accuracy, clarity & coherence.
Support preparation of any other reporting related documents needed by our client.

The Supply Chain Officer is expected, at the end of the contract, to report on the following deliverables:
Technical guidance on sustainable warehouse best practices & standards (the sustainable warehousing guidebook) including the main sections which are engineering technical guidance warehousing design & set up (e.g. solar systems, water harvesting, sustainable landscaping etc.) & warehouse management processes & SOP to include environmental concerns at warehouse level (e.g. managing waste from repacking, optimization, palleting, fumigation etc.).
Catalogue of sustainable warehouse management best practices at field level.
Shorter guidance to be included in transport manual, section on storage / warehousing.
List of suggested metrics for measuring impact & progress in environmental reductions in the warehouse field.
One pager for internal communication to create awareness on what sustainable warehouse practices are about (both in English & French).
Funding proposal document for external communications, which creates a single coherent narrative on sustainable warehousing, leveraging on current proposals at CO level & UNHRD level. This document will serve as fundraising & partnership tool.
Any other annex & documentation needed to have a comprehensive sustainable warehousing guidebook.

Project reporting:
This role reports to the line manager.

Key competencies:
Masters degree in supply chain, organizational management, industrial engineering, or any related field from a recognized university & / or equivalent work experience is required.
At least 15 years of relevant professional experience in humanitarian field operations with a focus in supply chain interventions and with a minimum of 8 years in warehousing.
Previous experience in working with environmental sustainability projects in the field of supply chain is a valuable asset.
Experience in creating technical guidance is an asset.
Fluency (level C) in English & French languages, written, spoken and oral comprehension is desired.
Excellent knowledge of end to end supply chain management, in particular of logistics practices.
Warehouse management & quality control: plans, coordinates & manages service providers & warehouse operations to promote safe, efficient & sustainable operating procedures in the face of changing climates & conditions within region of expertise.
Civil engineering & building maintenance related advanced skills in designing rehabilitations of logistics sites including environmental concerns & climate smart practices.
Strong research & excellent writing skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, namely Word, Excel & PowerPoint, Publisher.
Ability to meet deadlines & work under pressure.
Strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate & work with diverse people.
Ability to work independently & within a team.
Data analysis skills are an advantage.

Strong team management experience is required for this role.
