**Job Overview:**The vision of the IRC Washington’s Youth and Education Department is that youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds will have the skills and resources necessary to pursue a future of opportunity. The Youth and Education Department works towards this vision by providing educational and enrichment opportunities to help school-aged youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds catch up on missed education, adjust to their new school, accelerate English language development, and build positive relationships in the school and community. This position will support the Summer Youth Futures Program for newcomer high school students across South King County.
This program opportunity supports newcomer youth as they develop the skills, resources, and knowledge to pursue their future goals and dreams and to counter language acquisition loss and learning loss over the summer months.
IRC Youth Futures Summer Program: Youth participants will engage in a 6-week hybrid program, with virtual sessions as well as a one week intensive program with their assigned group. The in-person program sessions include opportunities to build peer connections, practice English, develop Social Emotional Assets, activities to explore postsecondary opportunities in the US, and the opportunity to join a field trip into Seattle! As the Summer Youth Program Support staff for this program, you will play a vital role in ensuring that eligible participants have access to this stipended program opportunity, feel welcomed and supported during the summer, feel confident to begin their next school year, and you will be supporting IRC staff in implementing a successful program.

Major Responsibilities:

Outreach and Registrations to Families

  • Conduct family outreach, registration and complete verifications of eligibility for program enrollment by calling with an interpreter line; explain the program, answer questions and assist families in completing required program forms
  • Maintain accurate and updated information on tracking files for external reporting purposes
  • Provide some systems navigation and digital literacy support to families struggling to connect to the program
  • Provide communication to families on program updates and creatively design materials and resources to answer frequently asked questions or to improve accessibility and understanding of the program information
  • Complete family outreach for program evaluation and feedback for the Secondary Program at the conclusion of the summer

Administrative Support

  • Experience, ability and confidence to drive an IRC van and transport students from their homes to program sites (vehicles will always include at minimum 2 IRC staff)
  • Support with organization of program supplies for distribution during program sessions
  • Support summer program staff with transportation logistics, field trip logistics, communication, and developing student or parent facing materials
  • Support in tracking student attendance and progress, using tracking tools provided

Program Implementation

  • Support lead IRC staff with building positive relationships with program participants
  • Support lead IRC staff with implementation of virtual and in -person program sessions
  • Facilitate effective processes including attendance records, inclusive and trauma informed classroom management, distribution and collection of learning materials, and health and sanitation procedures.
  • Create safe and healing learning spaces and build supportive relationships with newcomer students utilizing a trauma informed approach in order to support students’ academic and social and emotional development.

Other

  • Participate in program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a member of the IRC team.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency, including COVID Health and Safety guidelines for in-person instruction.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Internal: Youth Program Team, AmeriCorps Members, other IRC Seattle staff

External: EL Teachers at partner school districts

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent; BA in Education, Child/Youth Development or related degree preferred.
  • Driver’s license and insurance
  • Experience working with secondary school- aged students; experience in group youth enrichment programs desired (i.e. summer or day camps, youth groups, outdoor education programs, after school programs, field trips, sports/recreation programs or clubs).
  • Flexible and adaptable – able to quickly problem solve and change plans and activities according to participant/ team need or unexpected circumstances. Experience working with multi-lingual students and families.
  • Strong ability to remain organized, keep attention to detail, and manage time.
  • English proficiency, both spoken and written, proficiency in another language is preferred
  • Cross cultural experience; connection and experience working with communities from refugee and/or immigrant backgrounds.
  • Experience proactively communicating needs, changes, and status updates in a team environment
  • Experience and proficiency utilizing online platforms such as Zoom and Teams, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Committed to anti-racism and continual learning and growth.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing program and student needs.
  • Team player willing to provide support to other staff and students

Working Environment:**

  • Departing from the office with the team and working at the designated summer program location for that week (Tukwila, Federal Way, Highline, Auburn, Kent, and Seattle. Some office work required at IRC’s office in SeaTac, WA.
  • Standard office setting at IRC’s office in SeaTac and remote within the King County vicinity; Occasional evening or weekend activities as needed.

  • Need access to reliable high-speed internet from remote office or ability to work from IRC’s office in SeaTac.
  • Need access to reliable transportation to travel and work off-site at programs in schools in Tukwila and Auburn.
  • Typical schedule will be Monday – Friday 9:30 – 5:30 or 10:00 – 6:00.

Timeframe: This is a limited term contract with an end date of September 15,2023 with some room for discussion if ending September 1st is needed (for potential applicants working with schools).

Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
