Basic Purpose

Technical Accounting is a team within Corporate Accounting, along with Operational Accounting, Accounting Policy, Internal Risk and Controls, and Financial Reporting. We work together to create accurate financial reports. The Technical Accounting team focuses on accounting areas of higher judgment or estimation, including allowance for loan losses, current expected credit loss, investments, derivatives, and more. In addition to our team’s review and analysis of financial statement line items and monthly close activities, we are focused on finding areas of improvement in existing processes and controls.

We are looking for a driven individual with understanding of GAAP, and financial principles and terms who is ready for an immersive, real-world experience. The Summer Associate can expect to participate in the preparation of financial reports, analyze actual financial data, learn more about our general ledger software, and assist with other accounting projects and activities. The Summer Associate will need to be a motivated team player who can maintain efficiency and accuracy when multitasking and should possess an understanding of accounting and financial principles and a positive attitude. The Summer Associate should also be collaborative, trustworthy, receptive to feedback, and eager to learn.

The Summer Associate will assist with developing analytics, process improvements, and control enhancements related to our CECL reserves process, investment accounting process, and/or management reporting enhancements for various other high estimation accounting areas.

The Summer Associate Graduate Intern Program is a 10+ week graduate internship program beginning in May 2023 and ending in August 2023. The intention of this program is to hire graduate interns who prove their aptitude into full time roles following graduation. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a graduate or PhD level degree from an accredited college or university with an anticipated graduation date of December 2023 or later.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare executive financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends
  • Assist with process improvements related to CECL reserve and investment accounting processes
  • Support Technical Accounting team in identifying and revising reporting requirements
  • Assist with month-end close activities
  • Handle sensitive or confidential information with honesty and integrity
  • Take on additional tasks or projects to learn more about accounting, finance, and data analytics

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Accounting, Finance, or MBA preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or the equivalent combination of experience,

education, and training

  • Working knowledge of GAAP
  • Effective organizational skills and ability to respond to requests effectively and efficiently
  • Experience with data analytics and working with large data sets
  • Ability to translate business requirements into non-technical, lay terms
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of efficiency, accuracy, and responsibility
  • Motivation and a strong desire to take on new challenges and learn as much as possible

Navy Federal is now hybrid! Our standard enterprise requirement for a hybrid schedule is to report on-site 4-16 days each month. The number of days reporting on-site will ultimately be determined by the employee’s leadership and business unit needs. You will learn more throughout the hiring and on boarding process.

Salary Range: $41.00 – $46.00 hourly

Navy Federal Credit Union assesses market data to establish salary ranges that enable us to remain competitive. Within this range, pay will be determined based on factors such as individual qualifications, location, and market position.
