Job Description
AECOM has a global team of fire consultants working on landmark projects throughout the world. Our fire engineers have a diverse range of experience and training which equips us to deal with all aspects of fire engineering including structural fire engineering, evacuation modelling, smoke modelling, and academic research projects.
One key element is “on the job” training, and as such, as a summer intern, you will be involved in multiple stages of a project life cycle, from inception to completion, across multiple industry sectors, assisting and being supported by more senior fire engineers.
In doing so, you will learn how to develop and coordinate a fire strategy for a building, applying science and engineering principles to protect people, property, and their environments from the harmful and destructive effects of fire and smoke. You will develop your technical skills and apply them to real projects to achieve the optimum balance between competing drivers, enabling architectural freedom and remaining cognisant of the requirements for approval by the Authorities having jurisdiction. You will develop communication skills, and will liaise directly with the multi-disciplinary design teams, and attend workshops and meetings with the clients and building control approvers. You will write technical notes on design topics and building fire strategy reports, addressing means of escape, fire spread, provisions for the local fire service’s operation, business continuity, asset protection and sustainability. You will also learn how to adapt the focus of these elements for the project stage, purpose and audience.
Examples of projects that the AECOM fire team have provided or are providing fire engineering services for are:
- Al Wakra – 2022 FIFA World Cup Stadium, with post tournament legacy mode design.
- Birchwood – This new mixed-use facility for The Technology Partnership (TTP) is on a 5.8-hectare plot in Birchwood Fields, Cambridge. It comprises five low rise buildings, including a new office and laboratory facility.
- Broadway – This project involved the redevelopment of the site formerly known as New Scotland Yard, the former headquarters for the London Metropolitan Police Service. The site is now a mixed use residentially led scheme located in the City of Westminster, London
- Crossrail oversite developments, London – AECOM worked on a number of developments over railway stations, such as Farringdon station, taking into account the requirements of the oversite development its interface with the station below.
- Early Australian Stamford Years (EASY) School, Singapore – The 5-storey building (+basement) combined separate Australian and American (Stamford) junior schools (for ages 1-5), comprising 1000 and 1600 children respectively. AECOM’s UK and Singapore fire teams worked closely together to develop the fire strategy, based on the Singapore Fire Code 2013, but adopting an evacuation strategy typically used in UK healthcare buildings.
- HMRC Offices – a number of new and refurbished offices throughout the northwest of England. Fire strategies took into consideration HMRC operational requirements.
- Oriel – The Oriel is a new 10-storey facility brings together the existing Moorfields Eye Hospital and the University College London (UCL) Institute of Ophthalmology services into a single building.
- Royal College of Surgeons – The project extended and refurbished this Grade II listed building in Westminster, preserving the listed façade and existing spaces include the RCS library.
- Shakespeare Theatre – This new theatre in Preston was constructed primarily out of timber, and forms part of the Shakespeare Triangle, along with The Globe in London, and the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon. AECOM Fire were part of the team that won the North West Regional Construction Awards – Sub Regional “Project of the Year” Award for their contribution to the project.
- Westferry Printworks – This mixed-use scheme consists 11 multi-storey buildings (up to c. 140 m high), several connected by a shared basement, with residential, leisure and commercial facilities.
- Wessex Capacity – The programme, on one of Network Rail’s busiest and most complex UK networks, comprises capacity enhancements at Clapham Junction, Queenstown Road, Vauxhall, Waterloo, Wimbledon and Woking. Enhancements included the integration of the former Eurostar Waterloo International station (WIT) into the mainline station for operation of domestic services.
Job Responsibilities:
- Creating designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, fire strategy drawings and final working drawings under the supervision of an experienced engineer
- Collecting and analysing data under the supervision of an experienced engineer
- Using computer software as a tool for solving basic engineering problems
- Presenting work in appropriate media under supervision, including the writing of fire strategy reports and technical notes.
- Performing work in accordance with agreed budget and schedule under supervision
Qualifications
- Working towards a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in Fire Engineering or related, Structural, Mechanical, Civil, Aeronautical, and Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university degree course
- Good numeric and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Good attention to detail
- Flexible to deal with varying workload
- Able to demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in Fire Engineering
