Subgrants Accountant — Accounting

The NDI Subgrants Department issues and monitors subgrants granted to international NGOs and U.S.-based organizations. NDI monitors the subgrantees to ensure that they are in compliance with NDI donor regulations.

The Subgrants Accountant will play an important role in providing assistance to the Subgrants Department. Due to COVID-19, this position will start in a remote capacity. However, when the office re-opens, the position will be based in our Washington, DC office and the expectation is that the Subgrants Accountant will be based locally to fulfill this obligation.

  • Receive, store and review Subgrantees’ financial report packages. Review receipts for allowability and appropriateness of expenses reported, and record expenses using Costpoint Accounting software, update Subgrants Data Base.
  • Communicate with subgrantees or NDI field offices regarding the results of the reviews. Follow up proactively and timely on resolution of questioned costs, return of unspent funds.
  • Send reminders and ensure timely submission of subgrants reports to NDI.
  • Review, process and route Subgrantees’ payment requests for management approval.
  • Prepare documentation for external auditors during annual and donor-specific audits.
  • Conduct review and documents results of the Subgrantees’ Donor Specific Audits.
  • Perform subgrant close outs.
  • Support the Senior Subgrants Administrators, as needed, to contribute to an efficient and effective management of the portfolios and a positive work environment.
  • Assist with the Subgrant Assistants training, as needed.
  • Understand the applicable policies, procedures, controls, and authorization levels as they relate to Subgrants Accountant.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance or Business Management & Administration preferred.
  • Minimum four (4) years of work experience in accounting or grant management field.
  • Previous experience with international nonprofit organization is desirable.
  • High level of attention to details and accuracy in all aspects of work responsibilities and excellent organizational skills.
  • Good English writing skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, good analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff and subgrantees; positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to use effective strategies and tactics for accomplishing assigned duties, meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of word processing and excel spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of a foreign language is a plus.

Comments:

To comply with tax and legal obligations, all candidates for DC-based positions must reside in Maryland, DC or Virginia. While there may be flexibility for remote/hybrid work environments, candidates must be residents of MD, DC or VA or relocate prior to the start of employment at NDI.

This is a union position to be represented by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 2.
