ABOUT THIS POSITIONSummary:A Student Success Advisor-Compass Specialist provides services and support andcoordinates activities for students at our University to encourage studentsuccess and increase the likelihood that students from all backgrounds,including first-generation students, groups that are underrepresented inhigher education, low-income students, and/or otherwise at-riskstudents, be retained and graduate. The advisor promotes student successthough academic and personal mentoring; instructional coursework;utilization of assessments; coordination of services; and/orindividualized and group mentoring. The advisor is also responsible forsupervising Student Peer Coaches/Mentors. As a Compass Specialist, theadvisor particularly works to inspire the success ofacademically-underprepared students who are admitted into the Compass Programand who identify as first generation, to receive the support that they need toESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other relatedduties may be assigned.Facilitate communication and a sense of community with students throughmentoring and academic coaching activities conducted on the individual andgroup levels.Demonstrate a high level of discretion and judgment in actively assessing andadvising students from all backgrounds on key aspects of student success,including academic advising and registration, financial literacy andcounseling, and personal mental health.Identify barriers facing students, suggest solutions to studentchallenges, and make appropriate referrals for professional assistance orcounseling that can address barriers to student success that are beyondacademic challenges when needed.Provide personal support, and encouragement to students while helping themdevelop a commitment to and accountability for their personal and academicsuccess.Deliver instructional coursework for supplemental courses, which providesstudent support for populations who are at-risk of not completing theircollege degrees.Utilize various proactive interventions and assessments through individual andgroup supports to assist students in successfully choosing an academicpathway, completing their coursework, and making satisfactory academicprogress.Document and monitor contacts and student progress to enhance overall outcomesand assist with targeted proactive intervention implementation.Supervise assigned Student Peer Coaches/Mentors by utilizing officeguidelines, establishing work schedules and utilizing professionaldevelopment/training along with other OSSE team members.Continue established partnerships with university departments such asEducational Access Services, Integrated Resources for Information andSolutions(IRIS), Veterans’ Services, Career Services, , StudentWellness Center, TRiO, the Office of Campus Safety, Financial Aid andthe Office of Student Services to match and access appropriate resources tomeet student needs and to facilitate student understanding of theuniversity, requirements, responsibilities, processes, deadlines, and availablBuild rapport with and guide students in understanding the universityenvironment by offering them assistance in learning about university-widepolicies, academic best practices, majors, careers, terminology,financial literacy, and time management.Assist students in understanding the course requirements for their degreeprograms, pre- and co requisites, essential learning requirements,transfer credits, and graduation requirements as well as prepare studentsthrough pre-advising to meet with their academic advisors to plan out majorand course selection, internships, and career preparation with them more effectBe a team player with other members of the SSE team while communicating openlyabout student progress and concerns within the office.Be able to adapt to the changing landscape of higher education.Provide support for the advising portion of the student registration and/ororientation programs. Will need to work some evenings and weekends.
