This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by serving as an environmental toxicology subject matter expert and conducting public health investigations to evaluate the toxicological implications of chemical exposure.

Job Description And Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by serving as an environmental toxicology subject matter expert and conducting public health investigations to evaluate the toxicological implications of chemical exposure.

The incumbent works under general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, Chief of the Site Assessment Unit (SAU), Environmental Health Investigations Branch (EHIB) and is responsible for leading public health assessments to determine potential health risks from exposures to site-related hazardous chemicals and providing public health recommendations to senior management. The Staff Toxicologist (ST) will use principles of environmental chemistry, human risk assessment, and toxicology to produce scientific documents that require assessing complicated datasets to characterize the potential population at risk, identify sources of contamination, determine chemical fate and transport in the environment, examine exposure routes, and estimate potential health risk from exposure(s) using approaches based on pharmacokinetic methods and dose-response research findings.

As the subject matter expert, the ST writes, reviews, and revises public health scientific documents, provides scientific guidance in public meetings and serves in a lead capacity for to the junior health assessors. The ST understands environmental justice concerns, testifies as an expert witness in hearings and court procedures, practices good listening skills, and demonstrates calm and composure in challenging community settings. Statewide travel up to 15% may be required

A Certificate of Completion is required for the US OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) course, or this certificate needs to be obtained within the first four months. The incumbent must maintain annual HAZWOPER re-certification.
