Science Based Targets

Job Purpose and Background:

The Sr. Energy Associate will play a crucial role in the Sectoral Development Team of our initiative. The ideal candidate should have expertise in the energy sector to develop standards, guidance, tools, and technical resources that will facilitate the adoption of targets aligned with the 1.5°C goal within the sector. This role requires a balance of research and administrative tasks, with 80% of your time focused on research and knowledge development, and 20% of your time allocated to project coordination and stakeholder management. The direct supervisor will be the Energy Sector Manager.

About You:

As the Sr. Energy Associate, you will be responsible for conducting research and developing technical resources, tools, and guidance to support the adoption of 1.5°C-aligned targets in the energy sector, including power as well as O&G sectors. This will involve researching suitable decarbonization roadmaps, mitigation pathways, GHG accounting protocols and scenarios that will inform the target setting resources for the energy sector. You will help the Energy Sector Manager manage projects, stakeholder processes, author publications, and provide expert insights as a subject matter expert on energy within the initiative. Additionally, you will contribute to managing stakeholder relationships and coordinate projects related to the development of sector-specific resources in line with the SBTi standard-setting protocols. You will also provide support to capacity building, conduct research on Scope 2 emissions, energy efficiency, and renewable energy, and respond to queries related to the energy sector.

About SBTi:

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050. The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. For more information please visit www.sciencebasedtargets.org.

About the Team:

The Technical Department leads the development and maintenance of the key resources within the initiative to enable the adoption of climate targets in line with the best-available science and following best-practice for standard-setting organizations. The Sectoral Development team, a key pillar of the SBTi Technical Department, enables adoption and guides interpretation of SBTi corporate standards at the sector level. The team leads the origination and implementation of projects to translate SBTi standards into sector-specific standards, guidance, and tools at the sectoral level.

Have a good command of mitigation pathways, climate scenarios, and decarbonization roadmaps, as well as proven knowledge of corporate GHG accounting and science-based target setting.
  • Familiarity with agile and/or other project management approaches.
