Social Work Clinician – Diagnostic Evaluation Stabilization Center – Outpatient Behavioral Health

The Diagnostic Evaluation Stabilization Center (DESC) at New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital strives to provide high quality, state of the art, acute psychiatric care to our pediatric population in Washington Heights, Inwood and the surrounding areas. Our diverse patient population spans a wide range of cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. DESC provides care to families that come from marginalized and underserved, lower socioeconomic status backgrounds, primarily those that identify as Latinx and African American. Many of our patients have not had previous mental health services. DESC serves as an outpatient crisis program to stabilize youth within our community in need of psychiatric care, while simultaneously working with their parents, families and caregivers to enhance involvement in treatment.

Join a dynamic, multicultural, interdisciplinary care team working with children, adolescents and their families/caretakers. Team huddles occur daily to review cases and new referrals. Clinicians provide diagnostic assessment, individual psychotherapy, and collateral sessions in an outpatient setting; each case has a minimum of two contact points per week. All patient care is on site, as there is a need for close and frequent monitoring of patients due to high acuity.

Common diagnoses/areas of concern include depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, academic concerns/ADHD, behavioral issues, and parent-child relational issues. After an extensive, multidisciplinary intake, clinicians work collaboratively, with youth and their family members to create comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based care plans to strengthen the relationships, support, and safety net to ensure greater health impact and future success.

To be successful in this role, the social work clinician should have significant clinical experience with crisis management and intensive therapy with high-risk children and adolescents, possess excellent interpersonal and clear written and oral communication skills. Sharp clinical assessment skills demonstrated experience with diagnosis and risk management as these are the critical components of the work.
