Overview of position

  • Our client office is scaling up its support for development projects in Somalia through IDA and the Somalia Multi Partner Fund (MPF). The office would like to enhance online visibility of country outcomes using social media and is in search of a Social Media Specialist. The Consultant will develop and implement a social media strategy; provide strategic social media support; as directed by the our client communications team including promotion of projects progress, impact on beneficiaries, coverage of events and in-country missions for real-time use on MPF social media accounts in the Somalia Bank website, as well as sharing for use with partners and the government counterparts (the “Assignment”).
  • The Social Media Specialist will be an integral part of the Somalia communication team and will be involved in all communication activities and outputs related to social media. The purpose of this assignment will be to increase online visibility of Somalia program, showcase the projects, events and meetings taking place. On some instances, the Consultant may also be requested to be involved in other visual media projects as part of the assignment.

Role objectives

In the execution of this assignment, the consultant will undertake the following tasks, in close collaboration with the Somalia Communications team:

  1. Meet with our client Communication team to understand and agree on the scope of the consultancy and timeline. Develop clearly defined social media guidelines, aligned to overall MPF and our client communication goals. The guidelines will provide information and guidance on best practices and how to use communication techniques, social media tools and different platforms.
  2. Develop a social media strategy and implementation strategy, work closely with the Communications team to implement the daily running of social media accounts including.
  • Increasing followers on social media platform and promoting social media pages
  • Planning and delivery of digital and social media campaigns to attract the attention of the general public, donors, young people, civil society, etc.
  • Drafting and updating content for different social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and other relevant social media networks
  • Monitoring and analysis of the audience engagement on the social media platform
  • Ensuring social media presence and branding are consistent and cohesive across all platforms
  • Work with the multimedia consultant and communication team on increasing photography and videography output
  • Develop social media strategy and implementation plan focused on increasing impact, reach and visibility of MPF and World Bank Somalia work.
  • Manage social media for all MPF social media accounts, producing and curating content that reflects communications priorities and key messages and speaks effectively to the target audience
  • Monitor and moderate comments on social media posts, intervening as appropriate to answer questions and guide the conversation
  • Develop high-impact social media content – including graphics, videos and other multimedia formats – that effectively informs and engages external audiences and supports media and advocacy campaigns
  • Collect and analyze social media metrics to gauge reach, engagement and other performance measures for social media posts, accounts, and campaigns, helping to inform results-based decision making and drive the effective use of resources.

Key competencies

  • Degree in Communication, Political Science, International Relations, Digital Marketing, or a related field.]
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant job experience in journalism, advocacy, communications, marketing, or humanitarian work (ideally public information or content production). International exposure or experience will be an added advantage.
  • Experience producing, editing and disseminating multimedia content for online audiences ideally for media outlets, international brands, government, NGOs, or other international institutions.
  • Experience using advanced tools for online publishing, including content management systems and social media authoring tools like Social Flow, Hootsuite or Tweet Deck.
  • Experience working in sensitive and fast-moving news, communications, advocacy and/or fundraising contexts.
  • Desirable if experienced in the Somali context.
  • Experience interpreting web or social media analytics to inform strategies and work plans.
  • Strong editorial judgement, including ethical and political awareness.
  • Sophisticated understanding of multimedia content, including how it can best be produced, packaged, published and shared on websites, on social media and with news organizations.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills.
  • Proven skills in communication, networking, negotiation, and ability to relate to different audiences.
  • Strong diplomatic skills, highly developed political skills and judgement, understanding our client external relationships.
  • Excellent command of English and highly developed writing and editing skills. Good command of Somali language is highly desirable.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office essential; Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Premiere Pro an asset).
  • Familiarity with Adobe or Google Analytics
