The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are very good prospects for a long-term role. Employment location will be Bonn/Berlin, but there is flexibility to consider other working locations.

The Civil Society Academy (CSA) inspires and supports individuals and civil society organizations to become strong, impactful and value-based actors that contribute to better, more inclusive and democratic societies. Started as a Welthungerhilfe pioneering initiative in 2014, it has ever since supported 7.000 civil society members from 400 organizations in 53 countries through impact trainings, customized service offerings and co-creation formats. The thematic focus of the CSA is on leadership & organizational change, advocacy and social accountability as well as social innovation. The CSA consists of a strong, independently operating team and has representations in India, Ethiopia and Germany. To scale its impact further and to reach economic sustainability, the CSA shall be transformed into a social business of Welthungerhilfe in Germany, which will be a part of a global network. We are looking for a purpose-driven person with a strong business-mindset and a clear value base who can transform the CSA into a social business.

Your responsibilities

Transformation into a social business

  • Prepare and manage the spin-off process from Welthungerhilfe as an independent entity taking into account the regulations under German non-profit and tax law, as well as the special features of Welthungerhilfe as owner of the social business.

  • Develop a financially viable business plan building on existing achievements with growth potential from launch to scale taking the CSA network entities into consideration.

  • Transfer the current portfolio into the social business and make operations fit for purpose.

  • Define key business goals and key performance indicators and ensure that they are reached.

  • Ensure that business planning, proper P&L and business´s financial control systems are in place.

Define new revenue streams

  • Develop a marketing and fundraising strategy to position the CSA as a relevant and impactful actor to strengthen civil society organizations in the global south.

  • Develop new business-related revenue streams and product categories focusing on the European market.

  • Identify and acquire institutional grant opportunities for the social business.

Organizational development

  • Work alongside a dynamic international team on cutting edge concepts and processes.

  • Apply agile methods and cooperate with a self-managed team.

  • Develop a high-quality pool of facilitators that can address the needs of civil society organizations and carries forward an agenda of social justice and human rights.

Network relations

  • Ensure peer relationships within the CSA network in alignment with Welthungerhilfe.

  • Co-develop and formalize the future cooperation model within the CSA global Network.

Your profile

  • At least 5 years of proven leadership and business management experience, ideally within a start-up or gGmbH

  • Excellent proven leadership experience in agile contexts with high performing experts (new way of working)

  • Experience in organizational development and talent management

  • Profit & Loss responsibility at CEO or another senior level and experience reporting to the board and shareholders

  • Work experience in the global south, ideally with civil society organizations/social businesses

  • Experience in change management would be an asset

  • Sound understanding of business management and its operations

  • Excellent network and communication skills in international settings

  • Excellent spoken and written English; French language skills would be an asset
