About the Position

BRAC seeks an expert in social and behavior change (SBC) to lead the design and implementation of evidence-based approaches to SBC for the anticipated USAID/Bangladesh Community Nutrition and Health Activity (CNHA). We are currently inviting expressions of interest for this role, which is expected to start in mid-2022 and last for five years.

The anticipated goal of CNHA is to improve the nutrition outcomes of pregnant and lactating women and children less than five years old in Bangladesh. CNHA will address the inequitable nutrition outcomes of the most vulnerable segments of the population through a targeted community-health system strengthening approach.

The SBC Lead will have a strong and relevant understanding of SBC conceptual frameworks, approaches and interventions in addressing sociocultural norms to facilitate nutrition-sensitive behavior change at both the household and community levels. We are looking for someone who can develop an SBC strategy informed by new and existing behavior change approaches, such as behavioral economics and nudge theory.

The SBC Lead will collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including government ministries, implementing partners, and BRAC program staff to help design and oversee implementation of key activities under Result 2. Reporting to the Technical Director, this position will be based in Dhaka, with regular travel in Bangladesh. This position is subject to project award and funding.

Primary Responsibilities

● Lead in the development of an innovative and evidence-based SBC strategy across three result areas: 1) increased quality of community-based nutrition and health services, 2) improved household nutrition and health behaviors, and 3) improved leadership and governance for improved nutrition

● Ensure synergy between the Gender, Equity, and Social Inclusion (GESI) strategy and SBC strategy in relation to addressing social norms

● Identify promising SBC approaches and oversee implementation of key activities under Result 2 for strong program delivery

● Manage team to implement effective and evidence-based SBC practices in designated CNHA areas and ensure there is routine feedback mechanisms in place for continuous quality improvement in program implementation

● Build the capacity of other relevant program staff in their knowledge and understanding of SBC

● Develop SBC tools and programmatic guidance for nutrition-sensitive activities

● Manage team to implement effective and evidence-based SBC practices in designated CNHA areas, providing technical assistance and capacity-building to program staff

● Coordinate with other BRAC departments (research, communication) and external partners to contribute technical research and analysis through community assessments, market surveys, and existing evidence

● Identify and monitor key SBC SMART indicators and regularly use data to inform programmatic improvements in partnership with BRAC Monitoring and Evaluation

● Provide technical leadership in staffing, work planning, assessments, monitoring and reporting in collaboration with partners

● Coordinate with implementing partners and country counterparts to represent CNHA’s work externally and advocate for additional investments in global nutrition

Qualifications and Experience

● Must be a Bangladeshi national

● Advanced degree (PhD or MA) in public health, nutrition, health sciences, communication, or related field

● 10+ years of experience working in social behavior change and community mobilization in Bangladesh or South Asia region

● In depth knowledge of Bangladesh’s health system and the key partners and community-based organizations working on nutrition, family planning, sanitation, and hygiene

● Strong understanding of existing SBC strategies and new developments in the field

● Experience working on donor-funded and/or USAID SBC projects, preferred

● Exceptional leadership and communication skills to manage across teams in challenging contexts

● Strong interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with teams, local counterparts, donors, and other stakeholders to achieve results

● Fluency in Bangla and working proficiency in English are required
