SENIOR TECHNICAL ADVISOR NUTRITION

CARE is a leading humanitarian and development organization dedicated to fighting poverty and social injustice with a special emphasis on rights programming, gender equality, and women and girls. CARE works in a variety of contexts from protracted crises to stable development settings, as well as contexts in the nexus between these two types, and recognizes that the underlying drivers of food and nutrition insecurity are poverty, gender inequity, non-inclusive governance, poor adaptation to climate change and the inability to manage other economic and political shocks and stressers.

To address these underlying drivers of poverty, the CARE Food and Water Systems (FWS) Global Team has developed the “She Feeds the World” (SFtW) framework and the Right to Food, Water and Nutrition Impact Area Strategy (FY22-FY25), which underlie all of CARE’s food and water systems (FWS) programming towards the CARE 2030 vision. This leverages CARE’s experience and tools to influence broader systems to support empowered women and youth to a) GROW food and income-generating products, recognizing that healthy ecosystems, water management and climate resilience are critical to sustain water and grow food; b) USE resources, approaches, social protection mechanisms and technologies to reduce food loss and waste, increase WASH services, ensure nutrition; c) Buy and sell food and water-related goods and services in inclusive markets while diversifying their livelihoods and using market-based approaches. This includes Increasing women’s access to and control of sustainable productive resources and assets; improving nutrition; increasing access to water, sanitation and hygiene services; strengthening social protection and building efficient, inclusive local structures and systems; enabling women’s access to inclusive markets; and promoting livelihoods diversification and rural development. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is at the center of achieving these outcomes in all of CARE’s FWS programs. CARE commits to work with partners around the world to support 75 million people, the majority of them women and girls, to fulfill their right to food, water and nutrition as part of Vision 2030. The intent is to directly reach at least 25 million people (at least 55% of them women), and to indirectly reach a further 50 million people by 2025.

CARE’s Farmers’ Field and Business School (FFBS) model helps small-scale farmers build the skills they need to increase production, improve resilience, adapt to climate change, diversify diets and boost nutrition. The FWS Team will be up-scaling the FFBS model to reach 15 million poor women small scale farmers and their families, and support sustainable production and consumption through agro- ecological agriculture to increase nutrition diversity by at least 20%.

The FFBS Senior Technical Advisor for Nutrition will report to the Nutrition Director with a dotted line to the FFBS Program Manager. The incumbent will work closely with other FWS units (Gender, Youth, and Livelihoods; Food Security and Resilience; Agriculture and Market Systems; and Water+); Country Office (CO) teams; and other CARE USA program teams (International Programs and Operations, Humanitarian Affairs, Impact & Innovation).

Responsibilities:

• Leadership and support to global programming to FFBS
• Provision of technical backstopping to ongoing programs
• Support to proposals, program design
• Knowledge management and learning
• Advocacy support

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or higher in related field (eg nutrition, public health, social and behavior change, international development) or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• At least 5 yrs. experience in implementing nutrition-sensitive and/or multi-sectoral programming in the agriculture/food security sector, including field experience in developing country context or within an international development organization
• Demonstrated experience providing technical and programmatic support in nutrition and/or nutrition-sensitive agriculture
• Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of integrated SBC strategies (nutrition and other sectors)
• Experience in designing and implementing highly effective and efficient nutrition programs
• Inclusive and adaptive leadership skills; creativity; and innovative mindset
• Interpersonal and intercultural communications skills, with the ability to communicate knowledge in a manner appropriate to diverse audiences
• Proven ability to work in partnership with other professionals, and to support learning and sharing of lessons and best practices
• Demonstrated abilities in strategic planning, management, and oversight of complex technical initiatives
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Experience on FFBS, FFS or other community-based extension programing design and/or implementation
• Research and data analysis skills
• French, Spanish or Arabic
