We rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities

Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organization that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and it’s growing globally. Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organizations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.

Summary job description

Coastal communities are on the frontlines of climate emergency. But climate breakdown poses an existential threat to all of humanity. Blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass are the cornerstone of climate change adaptation across our coastlines and they are also one of nature’s most powerful mitigation solutions. To maximize the impact of the conservation and restoration of these wetlands, communities must play a leading role.

For over a decade, Blue Ventures has innovated ways for tropical coastal communities to both safeguard blue carbon ecosystems and earn a better living from them. We are world leaders in human rights-based blue carbon, developing climate finance initiatives that put communities first. In southwest Madagascar we have supported the development of the largest locally-led mangrove carbon project in the world. We also advance the science, produce new tools and methodologies, and share our findings so that everyone can benefit.

We are currently recruiting a Senior Scoping Officer, Blue Carbon Ecosystems to support the next phase of our work with mangroves, seagrass, and blue carbon by contributing to a global blue carbon ecosystem hotspot analysis, a critical step to inform the replication of our blue carbon program globally. This role will be responsible for a blue carbon policy analysis and an assessment of potential partners, data management, and supporting a GIS analysis, leading to the identification of sites with high potential for conservation and restoration, and the implementation of blue carbon projects.

Reporting to the Technical Advisor – Mangroves and Blue Carbon, this is a full-time role based in one of our global offices (Bristol – UK, Antananarivo – Madagascar, Dili- Timor-Leste), or home-based within countries where Blue Ventures has administrative capacity (Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania).
