Context & Mission

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent humanitarian organisation providing medical aid to victims of man-made or natural disasters, armed conflicts, epidemics and endemics. Its Operational Centre in Geneva (MSF OCG) manages medical assistance programmes in 22 countries, whilst MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 24 sections, 25 associations and other offices together.

The Senior Researcher – Medical Ethics’ role is to lead and develop reflection (real-time and/or retrospective) and operational research projects on medical ethics in humanitarian action .

The Senior researcher is responsible for leading, developing, and capitalizing medical ethics dossiers according to both the UREPH’s and the International Medical Secretariat’s respective work program and annual plans. He/She represents MSF in various forays regarding the dossiers under his/her responsibility and makes himself/herself available to carry out field assignments and visits and other functions within the conduct of his/her work.

Main Responsibilities

  • Support field teams and HQ staff in processing and addressing ethical dilemmas faced,
  • Contribute to challenging institutional and operational policies and initiate constructive critical reflection on how our MSF both functions and delivers its medico-humanitarian assistance,
  • Contribute to the generation and dissemination of knowledge pertaining to clinical and public health policies and the ethics of humanitarian medicine
  • Contribute to building partnerships between MSF and humanitarian, academic or public health institutions,
  • Coordinate the delivery of medical ethical reflection via an informal MSF Network on Medical Ethics,
  • Foster a smaller, bioethics working group to focus on key ongoing topics,
  • Lead and support on the medical ethical aspect of specific dossiers as requested

Your Profile

Education

  • Academic degree in medical, bioethics or another relevant field of ethics
  • Medical doctor

Experience

  • MSF operational experience (field and HQ)
  • Experience in field research
  • Experience and ability to build and animate a network of resources
  • Academic experience (peer review publications, academic articles…)

Languages

  • Fluent in French and English

Personal Abilities

  • Team spirit while able to work autonomously
  • Organised and structured way of working

Skills / Technical competencies

  • Ability to write reports and peer-review publications
  • Ability to represent and to animate teams
  • Ability to participate and facilitate ethical reflection
  • Ability to understand and deal with institutional issues
  • Ability to understand operational and humanitarian stakes

Terms of Employment

  • Full-time position 100% (40h/week)
  • Fixed-term contract, 12 months
  • Working place: Geneva, with possible field visits
  • Ideal start date: January 3rd, 2022
  • Gross annual salary: from CHF 107’413.- to 122’533.- (salary commensurate with equivalent experience and internal salary grid)
