Action Against Hunger UK

Job title: Senior Programme Funding Manager
Department: Operations
Reports to: Head of Programme Funding
Job location: London/Hybrid Working
Duration: Fixed Term/maternity leave cover (1 year)
Hours: 37.5 per week
Salary band: £46,917 – £50,211 gross per annum

JOB PURPOSE

In this role you’ll help develop and manage a rapidly growing funding portfolio. You won’t be alone; you’ll support the Head of Programme Funding and manage members of the programme funding team.

You’ll play a key role in helping Action Against Hunger to achieve our vision of a world free from hunger by increasing the funding from institutional donors and making sure we deliver when we get the funding. You’ll be in the exciting and important position of working with country, regional and global funds, and collaborating with colleagues both inside the international network and beyond. You’ll help raise Action Against Hunger’s profile and engagement with the UK Government and UK sector to inform, influence and collaborate on all areas of our work.

You’ll work closely with our Network HQs and country teams to develop opportunities, increase the number and value of new grants and commercial contracts, and ensure effective delivery. But you’ll also be a key person in engaging with institutional funders too.

So how will you do this? You will work at an operational, tactical, and strategic level – making the most of the links between funders strategies and the Action Against Hunger’s network own strategy and trends we observe. You’ll be proactive, bring a fresh perspective and innovative ideas, and bring a positive, ‘can do’ attitude.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Go get it – you’ll find, respond to and secure funding opportunities from the UK Government and
other key institutional funders:
• You’ll not just look for calls but support the network to actively shape and influence calls
and preposition Action Against Hunger for key opportunities including building strategic
partnerships with other INGOs/fund managers/private sector partners.
• Provide active management of our current FCDO Framework consortia (IMDP, CSSF,
EACDS II) and lead on relationship management with Primes.
• Lead on commercial contracting for the PF Team, identifying opportunities, providing
competition analysis, and supporting Action Against Hunger to identify and engage with
strong Primes. This includes developing and managing strategic relationships and creating
business development and positioning documents, such as capacity statements.
• You’ll support the Head of Programme Funding to deliver on the Diversification Strategy for
our funding sources.
• You’ll ensure that the response is strategic and, where it isn’t, hold fast to go/no-go criteria.
• Support the commercial contracting readiness audit and rolling out training to the UK team
and network on the mechanism.
Work with and for the Action Against Hunger International Network:
• You’ll work closely with the Network and especially with the Action Against Hunger
International Donor Relations Unit (IDRU) to maximise the potential for a strategic global
approach to fundraising, develop good practice and tools, and share learning.
• Act as a lead for commercial contracting for the Network – supporting them with
positioning and training and awareness raising of the mechanism.
• Function as a key focal point for the UK MEAL, Nutrition and Advocacy teams for
institutional funding opportunities.
Share what we do loudly and proudly:
• It won’t be a surprise that you’ll need to represent Action Against Hunger at relevant
meetings, events or forums with the UK Government and UK charity sector.
• You’ll have a key role in increasing the visibility of Action Against Hunger within the sector
and positioning us as a ‘go-to’ expert. You’ll support the Head of Programme Funding,
alongside the Head of Advocacy, to develop and implement an Engagement Strategy to
achieve this.
Provide technical support and put quality first:
• You’ll support the network in proposal development where necessary. Though this activity
will mainly be delivered by the Programme Funding Managers, you may need to jump in
where deadlines are tight and, in any case, in your senior role you’ll need to provide a quality
assurance role before submission so that we can be in the best position possible.
• Ensure quality and best practice approaches are embedded in how we work and what we
produce. This isn’t just about submission though; as a signatory to all the Network’s UK
Government related funding grants/contracts, we have the responsibility to ensure high
quality delivery and compliance on each grant/contract. You’re required to improve and
support HQs and country teams’ ability to deliver on these funds. This includes oversight
and support with contract negotiation, grant/contract management, due diligence,
compliance, and reporting processes, especially for complex, high value or multi-country
programmes. You’ll also support the Programme Funding Manager to do this, ensure quality
and be an escalation point.
Manage one Programme Funding Manager, as well as being an experienced institutional fundraiser
and inspirational leader.
The work may involve international travel in line with our International Environmental Framework
