SUMMARY

Save the Children is hiring a Senior Pedagogy Language Advisor for the USAID-funded Community-Based Basic Education Program valued at $36 million over five years. The focus of the education activity is to improve the reading, writing and math skills of young learners, ages 6-12, including disabled students (equivalent to grades 1-4) in the regions of Koulikoro, Sikasso, Segou, and Bamako District. The activity will continue efforts of the Selective Integrated Reading Activity (SIRA), but will focus on reading and writing in Bamanankan language for level 2 (Grade 3 and 4) and math for grades 2-4. The objective for the activity should consolidate and advance the progress made under SIRA by improving education quality in 1,000 USG supported Malian schools.

The Senior Advisor will assist in the design of appropriate or use of evidence-based material for reading in primary grades. In this technical role, the individual will also design effective inclusive curriculum and instructional approaches in a bilingual and transitional learning environment context for early grades.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  • Work closely with program staff to design learning and assessment materials for bilingual and transitional learning settings.
  • Develop, design and review learning and assessment materials for pedagogical quality and adherence to project standards and specifications.
  • Work closely with local government, schools, partners and other key stakeholders to align materials with other country specific programs including SIRA
  • Carry out training of trainers when needed.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned or as needed, depending on project deliverables.
  • Ensure the technical and methodological soundness of activities and, in collaboration with the project team and partners, support the design of service delivery strategies, based on sound and up-to-date evidence.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in education, with a focus on early grade reading, writing, and/or related field;
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience working on reading and writing assessment, curriculum design and instruction, and training of trainers;
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the design of effective inclusive curriculum and instructional approaches in a bilingual and transitional learning environment context for early grades;
  • Significant knowledge of the education system in Mali specifically in-service teacher training and professional development, pedagogical practices, and classroom management;
  • Experience ensuring the effective use of teaching and learning materials;
  • Experience working on similar USAID or other donor-funded programs; familiarity with USAID regulations and policies preferred;
  • Experience working within Mali required;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively in team situations;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in French required.
