Human Rights Watch

FIXED-TERM, FULL TIME JOB VACANCY

Senior Manager, Research Training

Program Office

Multiple Locations Considered

Application Deadline: January 8, 2023

Research forms a central pillar of Human Rights Watch’s (HRW) work. How we find, gather, assess, and present information is central to our ability to improve respect for human rights. In fact-finding and analysis, we strive to apply the highest standards of independence, rigor, accuracy, and ethics.

To bolster this work, HRW is hiring a full-time Research Training Senior Manager to expand and advance our current training program for new and longer-serving staff. The training manager will coordinate an existing team of eight part-time research trainers and work with other departments to ensure that our staff are equipped to conduct strategic and effective investigations in the service of change. This includes training on core human rights research and advocacy skills and training related to new topics, methods, and tools. A key task is advancing the program with a blend of in-person and online learning to support a dispersed and diverse staff.

The ideal candidate will bring expertise on human rights research methodologies, is a seasoned instructional designer and facilitator and has strong project management skills.

This is a full-time position and will require some travel. The role comes initially with a one-year contract but there may be possibilities to extend beyond this term. The training lead will report to the Associate Program Director and work closely with subject matter experts in the Program Office, and with other departments, including Advocacy, Media, Security, Human Resources, and the Chief Technology Officer. A key partner will be the Learning & Development (L&D) Manager in Human Resources to ensure a consistent and integrated approach to training. Candidates with experience working in the Global South are strongly encouraged to apply.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially or if local requirements mandate it. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic and unstable situations in many parts of the world, can create unique challenges, particularly for those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES*:*

Training Design and Delivery

  1. Assess HRW’s current research training curriculum and develop and implement plans to strengthen it.
  2. Design, coordinate and deliver onboarding research trainings at least twice per year for new staff and ongoing training to promote continuous learning.
  3. Coordinate and develop the internal roster of trainers, currently eight people, expanding it as necessary to ensure a diverse set of profiles and expertise.
  4. Identify and engage relevant external trainers; help staff find external training opportunities to advance their skills.
  5. Coordinate the researcher mentoring program as part of continuous learning, collaboration, and support.
  6. Together with internal stakeholders, develop a blended training program that combines in-person and online learning, both synchronous and asynchronous.

Internal Partnerships

  1. Work with stakeholders to promote a culture of reflection, learning and professional development.
  2. Partner with the L&D Manager to ensure organizational training alignment, curriculum management, cross-departmental coordination, and learning evaluation.
  3. Collaborate with our Digital Investigations Lab to ensure that staff are trained in the basics of digital research methodologies, and with the full Technology and Rights division and Information Security team to develop standards for technical research.
  4. Collaborate with other departments and teams, such as Advocacy, Media, Campaigns and the Collaboratory, to ensure that research training is integrated to achieve our key aim: strategic research for change.
  5. Work with the L&D Manager, Chief Technology Officer and others to develop plans and content for our forthcoming Learning Management System.

Research Standards

  1. Keep HRW’s research guidelines relevant and up to date, and work with others to ensure they are respected.
