Position Overview:

As the Senior Director of Organizational Development Services for CVNL, you will develop and lead our nonprofit organizational development services to best serve the hundreds of nonprofit organizations who seek out our programs. The Senior Director will monitor and be responsible for ensuring the sustainability and impact of CVNL’s nonprofit organizational development services and programs and stay abreast of developments in nonprofit capacity building. This position will work on business development across our organizational development services and programs, working with nonprofit leaders to address their organizational needs with strategic and targeted offerings. The Senior Director will be responsible for four interdependent and highly leveraged departments providing a range of services including Learning & Leadership, Executive Search, Consulting Services and Membership Services.

In addition, the Senior Director is a direct provider of consulting services to clients and manages consulting engagements from start to finish, including business development, contract negotiation, delivering expert guidance and consultation services, evaluation, and metrics. Consulting areas of service currently include facilitation, strategic planning, board governance, general organizational development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion capacity-building.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Director works collaboratively with others to advance CVNL’s mission and organizational goals. This is a full-time exempt position based in San Rafael, California with opportunities for hybrid work.

General Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the delivery of qualitative and quantitative goals and outcomes of nonprofit organizational development programs and services in line with the Strategic Plan.
  • Oversee the coordination, integration, and delivery of Consulting, Learning & Leadership, Executive Search and Membership Services programs and contracts, promoting collaborative relationships between program areas.
  • Provide effective and inspiring leadership, as well as stewardship, of CVNL by being actively involved in programs and services.
  • Implement and lead a continuous quality improvement process throughout the program and service areas, focusing on systems/process improvement.
  • Partner with the CEO to represent CVNL with external constituency groups, including community, governmental, and private organizations.
  • Ensure that program activities operate consistently and ethically within the mission and values of CVNL.
  • Prepare and submit an annual operational budget to the CEO and CFO for review and approval, manage effectively within this budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered.
  • Ensure that the expectations of funders, partners, constituents, clients, and other stakeholders are consistently met.
  • In partnership with the Fund Development Manager, maintain positive working relationship with funders and internal and external stakeholders to assess and pursue funding opportunities.
  • In partnership with the Marketing and Communication Director, develop a strategy to grow program engagement and develop new business for CVNL.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and developments in the nonprofit sector and advise CEO on issues relevant to CVNL’s strategy, market position and operations.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships within the nonprofit community in the Bay Area.
  • Represent CVNL with clients, members, community leaders and funders.
  • Participate in internal CVNL meetings as member of the leadership team.

Consulting Services:

The Senior Director works closely with staff and affiliate consultants, providing oversight and leadership to ensure strategic positioning of our work as well as delivery of high-quality consulting services that aid nonprofit leaders in advancing the missions of their organizations. In partnership with the CEO, the Senior Director also provides thought leadership, program development and implementation oversight to direct special projects and take advantage of timely opportunities across CVNL’s core areas of focus to advance our organizational mission.

  • Provide strategic leadership to CVNL’s consulting practice and lead development of annual consulting department priorities, workplan and budget to advance CVNL strategic goals.
  • Oversee all aspects of CVNL consulting engagements, including responding to inquiries and discussion of projects with potential clients, identifying staff or affiliate consultants for projects, drafting proposals and cost/time estimates, contracting with clients and affiliate consultants, providing support/technical assistance to client and consultants, invoicing, and project evaluation.
  • Develop marketing and business development strategies to advance consulting department priorities, working in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications, Fund Development Manager, and others.
  • Work with the Program Coordinator to manage administrative tasks in support of consulting department priorities and needs.
  • Provide direct services to nonprofits and other clients as a trainer, consultant, facilitator, and coach on issues such as governance, future direction/strategic planning, organizational assessment using the Impact Capacity Assessment Tool (iCAT), and management.
  • Develop affiliate consultant pool to include highly skilled, diverse, and well-regarded professionals across the array of content specialty-areas that reflect nonprofit needs and requests.
  • Prepare program reports for CEO, Board and funders as requested.

Program Development and Special Projects:

  • Develop and lead the iCAT services to provide organizational assessment to nonprofits throughout CVNL’s market region.
  • Working with the CEO develop opportunities to expand CVNL services, explore strategic partnerships, and identify top priorities for action.
  • Contribute to CVNL reports, papers, articles, blogs, etc. as prioritized to publicize CVNL’s work, and to develop and promote the nonprofit sector.
  • Serve as faculty for various CVNL programs as identified.
  • Attend conferences, meetings, and public events to represent CVNL externally.

We know that no one candidate will encompass all of these qualifications, please consider applying if you meet the majority of qualifications below:

  • At least 10 years of professional experience, with a minimum of five years of senior-nonprofit management experience. Thorough understanding of, demonstrated passion for and commitment to nonprofit organizations and the nonprofit sector.
  • At least five years’ experience supervising seasoned staff and operating multiple programs across a broad geography.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant course of study; an additional certificate in one or more of the following desired: Nonprofit management, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Executive Coaching.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of program planning and administration, organizational development, staff supervision, adult learning, budget management, contract negotiation, administrative operations, and fundraising.
  • Minimum of three years of consulting in the nonprofit field with expertise related to planning, facilitation and training, and/or organizational management. Other areas of expertise are a plus.
  • Strong relationship builder and communicator with the ability to find common ground, build consensus and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience leading diverse work teams, developing an organization-wide strategy for program excellence, engaging community partners, and partnering with a CEO.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and compile complex data for planning, program evaluation and reporting purposes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, inclusiveness, and empowerment.
  • Demonstrates integrity, strives for excellence in their work, and has experience of leading others.
  • Passionate about CVNL’s mission and able to promote and communicate the philosophy, mission, and values of CVNL to external and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong public speaking/presentation skills, including experience facilitating groups, presenting training curriculum and speaking in front of large audiences.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent project management, customer service, follow-up, and follow-through skills.
  • Business development experience as it relates to securing clients and closing contracts.
  • Self-starter, creative, patient, accurate, highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Strong technology skills including knowledge of MS Office, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, data management and social media as well as a willingness to learn new technology.
  • Ability to travel throughout Bay Area.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) a plus.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment, routinely lift or move up to 25 lbs.
