Senior Director of Development

Our client, Farmed Animal Funders (FAF), seeks an entrepreneurial fundraiser as Senior Director of Development, reporting to the Executive Director. This person will lead FAF’s strategy in significantly growing the number of philanthropists giving to charities working to end factory farming and to build a more humane and sustainable food system globally. As the leader of a new strategy within an ambitious and ideologically diverse network, the Senior Director of Development will enjoy remote work, the ability to develop a strategy from the beginning, meaningful funder relationships, and a fast-paced work environment with outsized possibilities for impact.

Farmed Animal Funders was founded in 2017 by a tight-knit group of foundations and high-net-worth individuals with the belief that we can end factory farming and build a plant-centered society faster together. FAF includes 40 funders around the world. Its existing programs include monthly group calls, a newsletter, philanthropic advising, customized research, a regranting fund, socials, and an annual in-person retreat. FAF is fiscally sponsored by the Humane America Animal Foundation and governed by a Steering Committee.

This is a first-of-its-kind position within the organization with major potential for impact in a movement that is currently underfunded relative to the size and scope of the problems we address. The Senior Director of Development is responsible for identifying, cultivating and connecting aligned high-net-worth individuals and foundations to the farmed animal protection movement. This position will play a crucial role in growing the base of funders to drive movement growth and impact globally. This position is unique in scope, the focus is on bringing new funders in the movement overall, not fundraising for one organization.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement key results (OKRs) for donor recruitment and engagement strategies in collaboration with FAF’s ED and members; critically assess and update FAF’s philanthropic outreach strategy regularly to maximize opportunities to bring in and retain new donors to the movement
• Cultivate relationships with high-net-worth individuals and meet agreed-upon goals for bringing them into the movement at the $250,000+ level for annual giving to charities aligned with their values
• Create and independently manage a portfolio of major gifts donors, leading the entire giving cycle from outreach to education, cultivation, connecting to a giving pathway and stewardship
• Help develop and facilitate a curated learning process for individuals new to this issue in a values-aligned way
• Represent FAF and the broader farmed animal protection and food system reform movement to philanthropic networks, donors and leaders in aligned social change sectors to build the visibility and impact of the movement
• Evaluate various philanthropic networks and organizations to determine where to prioritize outreach and engagement efforts
• Collaborate with other FAF staff to develop high-quality donor-facing materials and educational resources
• Develop and manage donor cultivation and stewardship programs including multiple giving pathways to align with philanthropists’ interests and desired level of charity due diligence
• Partner with ED and Director of Programs to facilitate philanthropic advising as requested
• Conduct research to identify potential major gifts prospects; Operations Manager can devote a percent of time to research
• Collaborate with other ‘meta fundraising’ efforts within the movement
• Report on progress and goals to the ED and Steering Committee
• Maintain a base knowledge of the various theories of change within the movement, the effects of industrial animal agriculture, impact bright spots, and the intersection between industrial animal agriculture and adjacent social justice issues

Required Qualifications

• Charismatic and incredibly relational, with the ability to generate excitement about new ideas
• 5+ years working in philanthropy, grantmaking, fundraising, or similar areas
• Experience being a persuasive advocate or communicator, exceptional relationship builder and networker
• Self-motivated, ambitious, and drives progress forward with minimal supervision
• Results-oriented with strong initiative, motivated to achieve goals and do good
• Excellent at prioritization and able to juggle many things at once
• Open-minded, collaborative, sees value in multiple theories of change, and able to work closely with stakeholders with diverse and sometimes conflicting values
• Embraces healthy conflict and feels comfortable with disagreement
• Strong written and oral communication skills, presenting information in a clear and compelling manner
• Knowledge of fundraising principles and best practices
• Familiarity with donor databases and CRMs
• Enthusiastic, creative and enterprising
• Have the right to work in the US and work in a US timezone

Desired Qualifications

• Has strong pre-existing relationships with high-net-worth donors not already in the farmed animal protection movement
• A strong understanding of the values, vision, and goals of the alternative protein, animal rights, food system, and farmed animal welfare movements

Compensation And Benefits

Grade: Full-time role, part-time is a possibility

Compensation: USD $150,000-$175,000 full-time salary range, commensurate with experience

Location: The United States (Remote)

Reports to: Executive Director

This is a full-time, exempt, remote position with a starting salary range of $150,000-$175,000. Farmed Animal Funders, through our fiscal sponsor, offers an excellent benefits package that currently includes up to a 4% retirement contribution match, medical, vision and dental insurance (paid 100% for employees and 50% for eligible dependents), up to $750 a year to cover pet fees, unlimited paid vacation, 10 paid sick days, 11 federal holidays, and flexible work hours. This position includes annual variable compensation potential based on agreed-upon goals for bringing in new funders to the movement, above and beyond the core work expectations.
