Since 1979, Trickle Up has focused on the most vulnerable, working with participants who live in extreme poverty and face multiple levels of exclusion due to gender, ethnicity, religion, and disability. The organization has worked with over 450,000 participants and their families, helping to sustainably lift over two million people out of extreme poverty in India, Africa, and the Americas. Position Overview:
We are looking for a strategic thinker skilled in digital data collection and analysis. This position is also responsible for training M&E staff as well as supporting the creation of well-designed projects and concept notes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the graduation approach and/or livelihoods programming. This position is remote in New York, NY.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Senior Director for MERL include, but are not limited to:
- Ensure effective and efficient data collection for each project and global indicators. This includes managing when relevant and appropriate, third-party data collectors for baselines, midlines, and endlines.
- Train M&E and program staff on M&E tools and best practices.
- Support the program teams in developing sound proposals and concept notes using Trickle Up’s program framework, the graduation approach, and global indicators. The MERL Director is a key figure in program design, particularly logframes, and theories of change.
- Ensure all projects have proper monitoring and evaluation plans.
- Prepare and communicate quarterly M&E and global indicator data for the board KPI.
- Support and coordinate with the grant officer to ensure data for reports is correct and timely to donors.
- Share Trickle Up’s findings, insights, and results within Trickle Up and with external audiences.
- Lead the identification of research opportunities and partnerships.
- The Director of MERL will also represent Trickle Up, either solo or with other Program leadership, in various networks and consortia.
Education:
- Master’s degree in international relations, development, or related field, or bachelor’s degree combined with a minimum of 10 years of field experience.
Experience Required:
- Minimum of 10 years experience designing and implementing monitoring and evaluation systems for sustainable livelihoods development programs, including qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
- Minimum 5 years work experience related to livelihood development.
- Minimum of 2-3 years experience working with digital MIS systems.
- Experience conducting evaluations in the field, including the use of participatory methodologies.
- Minimum of 10 years’ professional experience in the development sector, including at least 3-5 years working in the developing world.
Knowledge and skills
- Excellent writing, speaking, and analytical skills in English. Additional Spanish language ability preferred.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate key messages while engaging in open and meaningful dialogue.
- Proven ability to think and plan strategically, and to operationalize with virtual staff.
- Proven ability to effectively manage staff and optimize staff performance with clear goal setting, timely and appropriate feedback loops, and establishment of mutual accountability.
- In-depth understanding of the dynamics of poverty and poverty alleviation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of quantitative and qualitative evaluation methodologies, including survey design and participatory assessment techniques.
- Demonstrated expertise with graduate-level statistics, including sampling techniques.
- Strong organizational skills.

Other requirements
- Ability to travel approximately 30% of the time. Comfortable traveling alone and under occasionally demanding conditions (i.e., in rural areas with basic amenities).
Salary and Benefits:
We offer a salary between $100,000 and $120,000 commensurate with experience along with benefits for this full-time position.
