About CDP:

Founded in 2010, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) supports equitable disaster recovery through philanthropic consulting, localized funding and expert resources.

Disaster recovery is the process of improving individual, family and community resiliency after a disaster. Recovery is not only about the restoration of structures, systems and services – although they are critical. A successful recovery is also about addressing sources of inequitable and unjust outcomes, and individuals and families being able to rebound from their losses and sustain their physical, social, economic, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

With a focus on medium- to long-term recovery, CDP raises awareness of the need for committed attention and localized, sustainable funding to support marginalized and underserved communities.

Through its consulting efforts, CDP works with individuals and organizations to develop strategic approaches to disaster giving, educate internal and external stakeholders on best practices in disaster philanthropy, and craft effective grantmaking processes and partnerships. We offer foundations, corporations and individuals a suite of client-centered strategies grounded in three principles:

  • Fund local.
  • Learn from others.
  • Stay true to your organizational mission.

Specifically, CDP provides clients with:

· Grant management, including research on potential grantee partners, proposal development, proposal shepherding and stewardship.

· Research and analysis, including translating best-known solutions in disasters and humanitarian crises to our clients in a relatable, digestible and action-oriented manner.

· Technical Assistance, providing a range of operational or management support that includes custom training and workshops, due diligence, data review and more.

Examples of our previous client-based work are available here.

As part of our growth strategy, CDP seeks a senior director who can lead our client-focused work daily. In collaboration with the vice president and program and development team colleagues, the senior director will cultivate, lead and manage all client-facing work. This includes business development activities, proposal development, client stewardship, report development, curriculum curation, meeting facilitation and contracting. As necessary, the senior director will communicate these efforts to the board, staff, nonprofit organizations, funders and other organizations. Ultimately, this person will lead all of CDP’s fee-for-service work in a manner that encourages philanthropy to meet the need for equitable, medium- and long-term disaster recovery.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Lead and manage the pipeline of consulting clients, including identifying and cultivating potential clients. Business development is a key aspect of this role.
  • Craft unique consulting reports and strategies for an array of clients.
  • Build productive client relationships.
  • Represent CDP to the public, community leaders, social service and community-based organizations, disaster experts and colleagues in the field of philanthropy.
  • Collaborate with CDP’s communications and development teams to ensure that client stories are shared widely.
  • Manage all administrative functions relating to contract development and management with client organizations.
  • Educate donors and professional disaster organizations to increase donor/partner participation in disasters through informative, consistent and engaging community impact stories and data.

The work entails considerable oral communication and written reports, curriculum/meeting planning and facilitation with occasional travel.

This person will report to the vice president of CDP and participate as a peer and colleague in the team of professionals directing programmatic initiatives.

Education and Experience Requirements:

· ≥ 10 years of relevant, progressive professional experience in philanthropy, disasters and/or relevant technical expertise, including supervisory experience.

· Masters in related field or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

• Understand the disaster recovery and philanthropy landscape and current environmental, social and governance (ESG) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) standards and trends.

· Excellent analytical and critical thinking with precise attention to detail.

· Ability to work remotely with minimal direct supervision, including managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously individually and within a dispersed team.
