As Sr. Controller at War Child Holland (WCH) you provide management with advice and assistance regarding War Child’s financial control, management, systems and coordination. You monitor the accounting system and internal controls in order to supply accurate and complete management information for use in financial analyses. You give input in discussions about internal and external reporting and tax regulations.

As Sr. Controller you design, carry out and monitor War Child’s Planning and Control Cycle as well as design and implement processes for its accounting system and internal controls for head office, countries, programs and other entities related to War Child. As Sr. Controller you are a quality driven, analytical finance professional who thrives in a dynamic and multicultural environment of an international NGO. You see a due date as a nice challenge and with your strong communication skills you are able to hold others to it. It gives you energy to create clarity and overview and ensure that flawless financial data is submitted to form a basis of management decisions.

The Sr. Controller reports to the Finance Manager and works in the Finance department, as part of the Control team. You provide functional management to department and team members, specifically in accounting, project control and financial office administration roles. This role can be carried out from one of WCH offices (by equal suitability, preference will be given to local applicants).

Your responsibilities

  • Ensure the consistency and effectiveness of the accounting system (Unit 4 ERP) and internal controls and advises thereon
  • Define targets and standards for the accounting system and internal controls and implement and monitor them
  • Define general principles, guidelines and procedures for planning and control, monitor their effectiveness and oversee compliance
  • Provide expert answers to questions and advise management about financial issues, both on request and on own initiative
  • Gather financial data for use in reports, plans and budgets
  • Prepare and verify financial analyses and reports; provide explanatory notes, substantiating information, analyses and explanations to accompany plans and reports
  • Consolidate data from separate accounting systems and comply financial statements for external reporting
  • Support War Child’s credit control efforts by preparing numerical statements for future and existing liabilities and movements in expenditure and revenue
  • Review the financial impact of the board’s/management’s policy plans to support risk management
  • Identify discrepancies between target figures and actual results, and advise the board on measures and initiatives to take
  • Initiate projects, defines goals and targets for projects and assigns projects aimed at quality improvement
  • Coordinate goals and targets, projects and activities with other departments within War Child
  • Put forward suggestions for integrating products and creating synergies in processes
  • Monitor standards and guidelines for quality management in respect of the accounting system
  • Carry out all these exciting tasks independently from one of our offices and travel to our other offices when required (by equal suitability, preference will be given to local applicants).

Your Profile

  • Academic degree in (Financial) Management, Business Administration or Controlling (RC is an added value)
  • Min. 5 years of experience in a similar position within an international organization (ideally, an NGO)
  • Proven experience with financial donor reporting and donor requirements (preferably EC, USAID, UN, Dutch MoFa and similar institutional donors)
  • Excellent understanding of the accounting structure and planning and control principles of international organization of an iNGO
  • Outstanding intercultural communication and team player skills
  • Analytical, structured and with strong planning skills, cost-conscious and result-driven
  • Excellent advisory and reporting skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Full proficiency in English (verbal and written), fluency in other languages is a plus (Dutch,
  • Arabic, Spanish, French)
  • Microsoft Excel has no secrets for you
  • Thorough understanding of ERP systems, preferably including Unit 4
  • Fully support War Child’s mandate and mission
  • Preparedness to travel to WCH locations
  • Available 32-40 hours per week.

Our offer (if duty station is Amsterdam)

  • Salary range from €3,889 to €5,339 gross per month, based on 40 hours per week (the exact step determined by the years of your relevant working experience)
  • 26 vacation days (based on 40 hours per week), plus 2 additional free days
  • Vacation allowance of 8% of the annual salary
  • A contribution free pension scheme
  • Monthly mobile phone contribution of € 25
  • Possibility to follow training and/or courses and attend War Child’s events
  • The position is offered for one year, the possibility to extend is dependent on an internal reorganization.

labour conditions based on the local salary scale and T&C.
