Senior Associate Pro Bono Practice
An opportunity has become available for a Senior Associate to join the Pro Bono and Human Rights practice of Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr’s Johannesburg offices (the JHB practice). The ideal candidate should have knowledge and experience in Pro Bono / Human Rights and / or Public Interest Law and needs to demonstrate the relevant skills and ability to grow the JHB Pro Bono practice, in collaboration with the National Practice Head.
Qualifications And Experience
- An LLB or equivalent qualification (with a strong academic record)
- Admission as an Attorney in South Africa
- A relevant post graduate legal qualification will be advantageous
- At least 3-5 years post admission experience in a Pro Bono, Human Rights and / or Public Interest Law orientated practice within a legal firm or Public Interest Law organization is essential
- High Court and Magistrate’s Court litigation experience and familiarity with the Rules of these courts
Job Accountabilities
- Assisting to further grow and develop the JHB practice’s service offering
- Developing a good public interest law, NGO, community based and civil society organization client base, in collaboration with the National Practice Head
- Collaboration and relationship development with CDH Directors and Associates
- Running public interest law and Pro Bono matters independently and / or in conjunction with the National Practice Head as may be needed
- Drafting legal documents, legal opinions, pleadings and advice memoranda
- Conducting legal research
- Consulting with clients and counsel
- Providing community- based legal training
- Mentoring juniors
