The WaterAid’s International Affairs team is the ‘political brain’ of WaterAid, we filter the signal from the noise about how key actors think, and what informs their behaviour. Our work enables WaterAid to confidently navigate and leverage the external landscape facing our campaigns. We garner high quality intel, craft politically persuasive messages and build a broad cohort of champions.
As our Senior Advocacy Adviser – International F inancial Institutions you will increase and strengthen our advocacy and capacity to influence global development finance institutions, notably the World Bank.
This position reports directly to the International Affairs Director and will be based in Washington DC.

In this role, you will develop and implement advocacy strategies designed to influence the World Bank’s policies and practices on water sanitation & hygiene, as w ell as providing strategic support to WaterAid staff and partners to engage the World Bank effectively.
You’ll also:

  • Build a network of contacts and relationships, gather information, and advocate with the Board and staff of the World Bank on particular country operations and key policy areas
  • Represent WaterAid at meetings and conferences, write blogs, give media interviews and speak publicly
  • Keep abreast of complex and fast changing political debates and monitor emerging trends internationally, across the Bank’s key donor governments to inform WaterAid’s political positioning
  • Maintain a high level of expertise on issues related to development finance and help to develop WaterAid advocacy on key breakthroughs in support of achieving SDG 6
  • Participate in and support WaterAid’s engagement in the World Bank/IMF Spring and Annual meetings

To be successful, you’ll need:

  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy and campaigning
  • Strategic and creative thinking Strong and quick conceptual and analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work well and support international teams, and with international coalitions.
  • Solid understanding of the IFIs, preferably including the World Bank, such as mandates, ways of working, and how to influence them.
