Summary
Save the Children (SC) is a global leader in preventing water-related communicable infections with programming that advances essential services in communities, health facilities, and schools across development and emergency contexts. With over $45m in global funding for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and infection prevention and control (IPC), SC leads WASH and IPC activities on five global USAID awards and over a dozen bilateral programs spanning over 25 countries. The Senior Advisor for WASH & Infection Prevention leads the implementation and continuous improvement of SC’s strategic approach and technical support for WASH in health care facilities (HCF) and IPC. You will provide technical leadership across SC-led bilateral projects and serves as a senior technical advisor on global consortium projects.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
Technical Leadership and Support (80%)
- Provide strategic leadership across SC’s WASH in HCFs and IPC program portfolio, including SC-led bilateral projects and global programs.
- Provide quality assurance and organizational capacity strengthening to SC and its partners on all WASH in HCF & IPC activities.
- Provide direct technical assistance to specific Save the Children International (SCI) Country Offices (CO) and projects for program design, monitoring and evaluation, and report documentation. Work with SCI CO staff to strengthen capacity for WASH programming.
- Lead SC efforts to integrate WASH & IPC into quality of care, health systems, and broader maternal, newborn and child health programs.
- Provide input to the strategic direction and oversight for learning events and webinars focused on sharing partners’ experiences around implementation of WASH in HCFs.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and refinement of SC strategic approaches.
- Serve as SC’s lead representative to the global WASH in HCF Taskforce and other WASH, IPC and quality of care coordination groups.
- Serve as the primary WASH & IPC technical representative to donors on assigned projects. Lead donor and prime-partner reporting as per donor requirements on all assigned projects.
- Oversee program WASH & IPC activity budgets in accordance with SC standards and protocols.
- Manage program staff and oversee their professional development.
- Build partnerships and/or networks with external agencies and organizations including multilaterals, NGOs, and contractors.
- Solicit relevant qualified short-term technical assistance based on specific program needs.
- Contribute to SC’s reporting, strategic and operational planning, and other management and documentation mechanisms.
Learning and Innovation (10%)
- Lead WASH in HCF & infection prevention applied research activities.
- Oversee all technical content for donor reporting, learning events, research activities, social media products, and advocacy materials.
- Coordinate with communications and publications team to produce high quality, public-facing technical resources.
- Share and promote WASH and IPC learning and innovation through internal and external fora.
Resource Mobilization (10%)
- Contribute to SC’s resource mobilization for WASH and IPC work and coordinate technical inputs as needed for health and WASH opportunities.
- Foster and maintain relationships with SCUS Global Health and SCI Country Office colleagues.
- Identify WASH funding opportunities from USG and other donors and lead preparation of technical proposals for WASH including integrated WASH work.
- Coordinate with SCI Regional and COs for prepositioning on strategic opportunities.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 7 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience in Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, Engineering, International Relations or related field
- Demonstrated experience supporting facility-based quality of care improvement activities in the areas of maternal, newborn, child health and/or infections prevention.
- Demonstrated experience implementing quality of care and quality improvement programs within health systems in the context of international and resource-limited settings
- Demonstrated understanding of WASH systems and health systems.
- Experience designing and implementing research and/or knowledge-sharing activities.
- Proven ability to demonstrate planning, supervisory, and leadership skills as well as critical, strategic, and operational thinking
- Professional proficiency in MS Office suite.
- Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining and environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Proven ability to demonstrate planning and leadership skills as well as critical, strategic, and operational thinking
- Familiarity with USAID-funded activities, particularly within the Global Health Bureau.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team member with diverse headquarters, country office, and partner staff.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% of the time internationally and domestically
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Environmental Health, Engineering or related field
- Technical skills in any of the following topics: behavior change, clinical infection prevention, accountability systems, supply chain management and/or organizational capacity strengthening.
- Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods and peer-reviewed research.
- Experience working globally, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and/or Asia.
- Language skills in French.
