Danish Refugee Council is an international non-governmental organization, which promotes and supports durable solutions to the problems faced by refugees and internally displaced people all over the world.

Since 2014, DRC has been working in Ukraine with the goal of providing immediate support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and the affected population in the east of the country. The head office of the DRC in Ukraine is located in Kyiv, the program branches are in Mariupol, Slovyansk and Severodonetsk.

DRC Ukraine is looking for qualified Safety Assistant based in Mariupol.

Overall purpose of the role:

This role has an area focus and ensures compliance to DRC procedures and guidelines within the area. The role contributes to the development of area strategies, which are translated into action plans and day-to-day tasks. With technical guidance from the Safety Specialist, the role provides support and/or technical guidance for the area of operations while overseeing activities within the area.

In the role of the Safety Assistant you will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of safety policies, plans and procedures in areas of operation; providing advice on all safety related manners and protocol; assisting Country Director and Area Manager with fleet monitoring, premises selection and other tasks.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

• Monitor the evolving situation in areas of operation and relay this information to relevant staff members.
• Establish a network of local contacts which facilitates safe access for DRC operations.

• Assist in the development and facilitation of training to DRC staff and drivers.

• Conduct site assessments and identifying of office spaces, guesthouses, warehouses and other sites as required.
• Assist in the drafting of standard operating procedures, contingency plans, threat assessments and other documents
• Assist in the updating of pre-arrival briefs, local safety rules, security phone trees and safety briefs.

• Assist the implementation of safety policies, protocols and procedures.

• Assisting the Safety Specialist to carryout regular safety audits of the offices, warehouses and guesthouses to include, but not limited to, checks of fire extinguishers, safe room supplies, first aid kits, emergency communication equipment and physical security elements (MOSS).

• Assist in the development of Safety Improvement Plans (SIP) for any gaps in safety identified.

• Alert relevant parties in case of an emergency event.

• Assist the Fleet Team leader ensuring vehicle personal tracking system are in place. Safety equipment are placed in vehicles and verifying usage information and reports

• Assist controls adherence by the departments of the Organization norms of the current legislation, rules, standards, provisions, instructions on labor protection, industrial sanitation, fire protection and environmental protection.

• Carries out constant control over observance by workers of requirements concerning labor protection.

• Any other general administration task requested by the line manager.

Required experience and competencies:

• Diploma or equivalent professional qualification.

• At least 1-year experience in similar role.

• Experience working in multicultural work settings.

• Experience with information gathering.

• Experience working in hostile or hazardous environments.

• Advanced English proficiency.

• Fluency in local language.

Contract length: First contract 3 months as probation period with possibility to extend based on probation and available funding.

Level: I2
