Department: Governance & Compliance (G&C)

Place of Work: Any location where Light for the World operates, with some international travel required
Duration: Full-time (40hrs/week) or Part-time (30 hrs/week), permanent
Salary: Competitive, according to local NPO sector average and dependent on experience
Reports to: Head of Governance & Compliance
Starting date: As soon as possible

The Safeguarding Officer will lead the further development and implementation of the Safeguarding Policy throughout the organization. The role will guide and coordinate implementation efforts across the different countries of operation, working closely with the country level management and focal points. The role also reports to donors and is involved in due diligence processes. Where there is Safeguarding incident to manage, the Safeguarding Officer manages the organization’s response. The Safeguarding Officer acts as a substitute for the Safety & Security Officer as necessary.

Your tasks

1. Implementation and further development of Safeguarding Policy

  • Responsible for the management and implementation of the Safeguarding procedures in close collaboration with country level management, programme management and focal points
  • Ensure proper documentation of safeguarding procedures, referral agencies and other service providers. Communicate the Safeguarding Policy, procedures and prevention measures through internal information channels
  • Further develop sensitization and training measures for the different needs of the stakeholders within the organization and act as a technical adviser for our programme partners
  • Coordinate and the development of minimum standards and procedures in countries where Light for the World has partnerships but does not have an office
  • Cooperate with the Governance & Compliance Team in the selection, set-up and roll-out of a whistleblowing mechanism, allowing the reporting of incidents anonymously
  • Observe international trends and feeds back into the organization. Build network of contacts, experts and service providers.
  • Support the Head of Governance & Compliance in drawing up the budget and the revolving forecasts for safeguarding

2. Safeguarding case management and reporting

  • Manages the response to safeguarding cases by acting as a point of escalation for incident reports, providing technical advice on investigations, conducting the investigation where necessary, communicating with internal stakeholders, preparing reports in connection with the outcome of the cases, and follows up on agreed measures
  • Ensure compliance with external (e.g., donors, government regulators) and internal reporting standards.
  • Keep an overview of all cases within the organization, prepares the Board Report on Safeguarding twice a year.

Your profile

  • You bring solid experience safeguarding, or in related fields like human rights, coaching, social work, human resources or similar.
  • You have experience in setting up standards, implementing (safeguarding) procedures and building networks.
  • You are a person of high integrity, have strong interpersonal and negotiation skills and are trustworthy. You are able to build good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You bring excellent English skills. Other languages, e.g. German, French or Portuguese are an asset.
  • You describe yourself as IT savvy and have worked with MS Office applications
  • Ideally you bring knowledge in legislation in child/adult protection or general legislation and understanding for programme work.
