Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V., International Assistance (JIA), is looking for a Safeguarding Coordinator – 6 months to 1 Year Contract

Location: Berlin, Germany or any other Johanniter location in Africa, Latin America, South East Asia

Organisation Description: Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. is a German Christian non-governmental organisation, dedicated to excellence in the field of first aid, ambulance service, social service programmes and other projects in the medical and social field. Johanniter International Assistance (JIA) is the operational unit for humanitarian aid. The Federal Headquarters (HQ) is based in Berlin, Germany. Overall Job Purpose

Safeguarding at Johanniter International Assistance is our commitment to ensure that all our programs and operations are free from any form of exploitation, abuse, harassment and any other form of harm. Johanniter International Assistance’s Safeguarding Framework includes the Protection from Sexual Exploitation, abuse and harassment (PSEAH), safeguarding and protection of children and adolescents, and internal protection from discrimination, racism and workplace harassment.

In a Nutshell

You will:

  • With the Head of Accountability and Compliance be responsible for ensuring the implementation of Johanniter’s Safeguarding Framework in our programmes, countries of operation and HQ.
  • Develop, maintain and improve systems to prevent and respond to safeguarding concerns.
  • Develop and organise awareness raising measures in Safeguarding for staff and partner organisations.

What you will do:

Strategy and Vision

  • Actively support the values of Johanniter and shapes own work area according to these values.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the global strategy of Johanniter International Assistance.
  • Support the development of an organisational culture and leadership that addresses power relations and privilege, promotes diversity and inclusion, and encourages continuous self-reflection.

Training and awareness raising

  • Work with teams throughout Johanniter operation to ensure that safeguarding prevention and response measures are mainstreamed throughout programs and operations.
  • Create and adapt (contextualized) training content and models for delivery, remote and in person.
  • Increase staff and partner personnel’s awareness on safeguarding standards and expectations through training and awareness raising activities
  • Support Roll-out of the Code of Conduct, the safeguarding framework and the referring policies
  • Work with HR and program teams to ensure that safeguarding briefings are included in the on-boarding of staff, volunteers and consultants
  • In coordination with country teams, program, Strategy and Learning and Accountability & Compliance Desk, ensure communities and people we work with, understand their rights, Johanniter’s Safeguarding Policies, reporting channels, response systems and our survivor centred approach
  • Coordinate the on-boarding of country-based Safeguarding Focal Points, incl. Training of Trainers and mentoring respective technical consultants

Systems, Processes and Tools

  • In coordination with operations and program colleagues, advise on safeguarding risk assessments at country and program level and advise on developing risk mitigation plans accordingly
  • Work with program teams, incl. emergency desk to ensure that safeguarding measures are incorporated in the lifecycle of programs, including the design, implementation, and revision of programs
  • Work with Strategy and Learning and program teams to ensure that community based, safe and confidential Complaints and Feedback Mechanisms are implemented in all programs, and that protocols are developed for handling safeguarding related concerns.
  • Collaborate with Strategy and Learning to incorporate safeguarding and accountability into PMEAL activities
  • Assist and advise program and operations colleagues to assess partner’s safeguarding capacity and where needed ensure that safeguarding capacity development activities take place
  • Work with HR teams to ensure that safeguarding is incorporated into recruitment of all staff and Safeguarding is integrated into interviews.
  • Advise country offices and other departments on support (medical, psycho-social, legal) for survivors of SEAH violations in accordance with international standards (esp. UN).
  • Work with the communication department on effective safeguarding and PSEAH communication, e.g. CoC (internal and external).

Case Management

  • Assist the Head of Accountability & Compliance in case management upon request
  • Provide support to country office focal points in handling reported cases and maintaining incident and training trackers based on inputs from safeguarding focal points in close in agreement with Head of Accountability & Compliance.

What you bring:

  • At least 5 years contextual experience in humanitarian/international development programmes, including Safeguarding, PSEAH, Child Safeguarding
  • Knowledge of international principles, standards and operational challenges in the field of Safeguarding
  • Strong communication skills and experience in dealing with culturally sensitive topics
  • Experience with participative processes, conducting trainings and workshops in the adult sector
  • Strong project management skills – development and monitoring of action plans in complex project constellations
  • Very good team player with persuasive power
  • Adaptable working style; effective in dealing with ambivalent situations
  • Willingness to travel to project countries, even under difficult security conditions
  • Fluent in English.
  • Good knowledge of French/Spanish is an advantage
