Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurse – Band 6

The Inpatient Diabetes Nursing Service (IDSN)) provides nursing advice for patients including their families and care givers within the speciality of Diabetes at diagnosis, on-going treatment and follow up. This includes support, education and surveillance for complications of Diabetes in the acute setting in order to maintain quality of life and independence at all ages wherever possible.

We aim to facilitate and expedite Diabetes management, discharge and follow up care. To reduce bed occupancy for patients with Diabetes, where possible and improve their experience of diabetes care during the admission.

To improve the peri-operative pathway of care for patients with diabetes undergoing elective and emergency surgery.

To prevent admissions to the RUH as practicable.

The service takes referrals from all members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) during an acute phase and liaises closely with primary care to ensure continuity.

The IDSN works seamlessly with community Diabetes Specialist Nurses, physicians, obstetricians, midwives, surgeons, podiatrist dietitians and clinical psychologists to provide:

  • In patient care for adults
  • Emergency Department including MAU to provide assessment and care planning of all patients with diabetes
  • Joint obstetric clinic
  • Nurse/midwife led gestational diabetes clinic
  • Peri-Operative diabetes clinic
