The role:

Save the Children International is committed to strengthening our Safeguarding work in humanitarian settings – with robust mechanisms for prevention, disruption and response, offering support to survivors, promoting a child safe environment, and holding those responsible for abuses to account.

The Safeguarding Humanitarian specialist will proactively support the Safeguarding functions embedded within our Humanitarian team, focusing on supporting and strengthening child and adult safeguarding at every stage within the humanitarian responses in WCA, from the emergency preparedness stage, through to exit strategy planning. This role offers excellent opportunities for regional travel (up to 50%) and an opportunity to develop specialist skills and experience in this emerging area of work.

The role will include close collaborative working with other technical areas especially, Operations, HR, Gender, SGBV, Advocacy, COMMS, IT, Child Protection, Safety & Security, Fraud and MEAL) to help ensure our safeguarding practice in emergencies is robust, and will also involve supporting a safeguarding ‘lessons learnt’ process. They will design and deliver culturally appropriate, impactful information, communication and training products, provide administrative and research support, and assist in the implementation and tracking of the safeguarding aspects of our humanitarian strategy.

This role will also be responsible for increasing safeguarding engagement and awareness among CO and RO staff and deployable humanitarian staff in WCA, including case management via DATIX.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal job description and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

To be successful you will have/bring:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate or Masters in Gender, Social work, Education, Child Protection, Child Rights, Human Rights, Humanitarian Action, Anthropology, Development, Conflict or related degree

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • Education to degree standard with a professional qualification in a relevant field
  • Substantial experience of child safeguarding, child protection, PSEA, SGBV or MEAL issues and practice, within humanitarian or insecure settings, including leading or participating in investigations.
  • Experience living or working in a development context, emergency response contexts or fragile states.
  • Excellent communication skills with proven writing and numerical experience in writing/editing briefing documents, monitoring reports and investigation reports.
  • Proven attention for detail and ability to effectively manage a high volume of data and information.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in order to deal tactfully and sensitively with a wide range of people in a large organisation, very often at a distance.
  • Good team member skills, including the ability to be part of and organise, support, manage and develop a small team;
  • Experience in designing and delivering training or workshops to diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage stress, be flexible and accommodating in difficult and frustrating working circumstance.
  • Proven ability in terms of verbal communication, training and report writing in French and English Both preferred.
  • Commitment to and understanding of child rights, as well as of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles.
  • Ability to take a proactive approach to problem solving, to recommend and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Willingness and ability to travel abroad at short notice.
  • Ability and willingness to change work practices and hours in the event of major emergencies including travelling at short notice and for extended periods of time

Desirable

  • Experience living or working overseas in insecure locations.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and/or Learning (MEAL) experience.
  • Knowledge of Save the Children’s key sectors
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Commitment to Save the Children values.
  • Knowledge of international humanitarian systems, institutions and donors.
  • Language abilities in French, English and local languages in WCA

Location: Any Country with SCI presence up to 50% travel

Contract length: 1 year
