About Us

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy and action research organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. We are based in London and work on five continents with some of the world’s most vulnerable people to strengthen their voice in the decision-making arenas that affect them. With more than 150 members of staff working with associates and partners around the world, IIED has been at the forefront of evidence-based policymaking in sustainable development for over 50 years.

IIED’s Climate Change Group (CCG) works with those who are afforded less voice and power in climate decision-making to co-create solutions that shape pathways and drive action for a just and sustainable future. Within this, the Global Climate Law, Policy and Governance Team works to support least developed countries (LDCs) to achieve equitable and ambitious outcomes in global climate decision making.

In line with IIED’s 5-year strategy “Make Change Happen” the team is undertaking work in three strategic areas: diplomacy and negotiations support, capacity building and national implementation.

We are now looking for a Researcher to join Global Climate Law, Policy and Governance Team, within the CCG, on a permanent, full-time basis.

The Benefits

  • Salary of £33,869 – £37,270, with up to £42,029, per annum depending on experience, plus benefits
  • 25 days’ annual leave per year, increasing up to 30 days’ for full-time staff with 10 years’ service
  • 7.5% employer’s pension contributions to the IIED pension scheme
  • A range of flexible working options for all employees after a qualifying period
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption policies

This is a unique opportunity for an advocacy research professional with experience working in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations to join our growing organisation.

So, if you would love to travel internationally for work while providing key information that will lead to a just and sustainable future, we want to hear from you.

The Role

As a Researcher, you will take on an exciting and challenging role in which your innovative research will support our work to achieve equitable and ambitious outcomes in global decision making about climate change.

Working closely with colleagues and a network of international partners, you will spend the majority of your time researching and providing technical assistance that supports UNFCCC negotiations.

The other main areas of your role will include communicating research findings through publications and facilitating least developed country (LDC) media engagements. You will also be involved in designing projects, identifying and organising resources and monitoring project budgets.

Additionally, you will be involved in some business development and liaison and networking activity to further the capabilities of IIED and help deliver funding streams.

This role will also involve:

  • Providing critical analysis and interpreting data to further diplomatic efforts
  • Identifying and applying methods to obtain primary and secondary information and data
  • Undertaking individual research on selected topics

About You

To be considered as a Researcher, you will need:

  • Experience working in the UNFCCC negotiations, with LDC negotiators highly desirable
  • Experience researching for advocacy, including meta-analysis, literature reviews, report preparation and non-technical communications
  • A track record of managing arrangements for meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences, in-person and online
  • Experience writing and editing for a range of audiences, including proposals, narrative reports, briefing papers and technical publications in English, with French highly desirable
  • The willingness to travel internationally to project commitments, up to three months per year
  • A graduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental or social science discipline or equivalent experience

Experience of developing a research strategy would be beneficial to your application. Experience of drafting successful funding proposals and liaising with funding agencies would also be an advantage, as would possessing a degree that included a component on research methods.
