About Us

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy and action research organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. We are based in London and work on five continents with some of the world’s most vulnerable people to strengthen their voice in the decision-making arenas that affect them. With more than 150 members of staff working with associates and partners around the world, IIED has been at the forefront of evidence-based policymaking in sustainable development for over 50 years.

This role falls within the Natural Resources Group (NRG). The NRG seeks to promote sustainable governance of natural resources by building capacity and promoting informed decision making in communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Our priority is on local control and management of natural resources and other ecosystem services and on the necessary changes needed in national and international government to make this happen.

We are now looking for a Researcher to join the NRG team on a permanent, part-time (minimum 0.8 FTE) or full-time basis (35hrs per week).

The Role

As a Researcher, you will support the delivery of various research projects focusing on natural resources in the Global South.

Your primary focus will be on a programme which aims to reverse environmental degradation in Africa and Asia. Through identification, adoption and replication of innovative approaches, your research will result in improvements in the condition of natural landscapes in ways that enable people and nature to thrive together.

Conducting collaborative research, you will analyse and communicate findings to reach policy audiences as well as using them to write pieces for publication, targeting different audiences with different forms of media.

Additionally, you will:

– Set up and run meetings, workshops and other events, online and in person – Identify and organise resources for project planning and delivery – Supervise and/or mentor research assistants, interns, consultants and collaborators – Contribute to setting up and monitoring project budgets in conjunction with programme/project managers and co-ordinators – Develop and write new project proposals

About You

To be considered as a Researcher, you will need:

– Work experience in research, advocacy or policy advice, on issues of environment and development in the Global South – Experience conducting literature reviews and research synthesis – Knowledge of institutions, actors, and current debates and research agendas in environmental degradation and restoration, biodiversity, climate change and Indigenous Peoples – An understanding of how to work effectively with partners in developing countries – Advanced knowledge of Office software – Working knowledge of another relevant international language (e.g. French, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese), in addition to English – The ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural settings, including remotely – Skills to carry out a political economy analysis to improve project design and delivery – A degree in a discipline related to natural resource management, sustainable development, international relations or economics

Please note, this role will require travel to developing countries when circumstances allow. The salary range advertised in GBP is applicable in the UK only, and the salary offer in another country would depend on the local terms and conditions. We only use the UK salary structure to determine starting salaries, but it will not apply to salaries outside the UK thereafter.
