Associate Overview:

Platform for Peace and Humanity is an international civic association promoting and advocating humanitarian values through international law, providing research-driven monitoring, consultancy and specialist expertise on international law, humanitarian and human security matters and advocating progressive development of international law in matters of international peace.

The organisation’s work is structured into programmes: Southeast Europe and Black Sea Region, Mediterranean, Central Asia, Towards the Enforcement of the Right to Peace, Ukraine and the new Indo-Pacific programme.

The Four regional programmes publish analysis in the Peace & Security Monitor publication, with actionable policy recommendations supporting the Platform’s organisational objectives. The organisation also publishes a Weekly News Recap to raise awareness among the general and expert audience on the latest international justice and peace and security developments.

The Indo-Pacific programme focuses on the geopolitical, human rights and humanitarian situation throughout the region. The Programme’s quarterly Peace & Security Monitor closely follows the latest regional developments and provides actionable policy recommendations for decision makers in accordance with the organisational objectives of promoting and advocating humanitarian values.

Position Overview:

We are looking for Researchers to join the Indo-Pacific programme. The role involves researching, analysing and writing on current regional geopolitical, human rights and humanitarian issues and contributing to the quarterly Peace & Security Monitor. The role may also involve writing blog posts and contributing to projects when available or appropriate. The role will suit those knowledgeable on the Indo-Pacific region and a background in international law, international relations or development studies.

Deadline: 31 March 2024 (Midnight CET)

Start date: asap

Duration: min. 12 months

Commitment: 5-10 h/week, flexible work hours

Location: home office (remote)

Remuneration: unpaid (volunteering)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research geopolitical, human rights and humanitarian issues in the region using open source information and qualitative and quantitative research techniques.
  • Contribute a well-written and researched 2,000 word article with actionable policy recommendations for the Peace & Security Monitor quarterly publication, as well as blog posts and other work when appropriate.
  • Participate in projects, field work and wider Platform for Peace and Humanity activities when available or appropriate.

Qualifications:

Mandatory:

  • Passion and dedication to the mission and values of the organization, result-driven commitment, ability to work in an international team and handle uncertain situations with flexibility
  • A good understanding of the Indo-Pacific region, including the geopolitical situation and human rights and humanitarian issues.
  • A good understanding of international criminal law, international humanitarian law and/or human rights
  • Experience with academic writing
  • Very good proficiency in English (C1). Proficiency in another regional language, such as Indonesian, Hindi or Filipino would be an asset.
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to convey complex information and messages in a simple way and easily understood by target audiences
  • Ability to meet reasonable deadlines and ability to work in a team

Desirable:

  • Entrepreneurial spirit with out-of-the-box thinking to propose new initiatives
  • Willingness to continuously learn and develop new skills
  • Previous experience with non-profit organizations and project management
