Would you like to conduct research and policy analysis that helps set the global human rights agenda in the climate justice field?

ABOUT THE ROLE

The role will lead on the development and implementation of research and advocacy strategies, develop policy positions, as well as provide authoritative advice to country and thematic specialists in the International Secretariat (IS) and the wider Amnesty movement.

Research will cover harmful government policies and company operations; a just and human rights-consistent transition to zero-carbon economies; and the global and local human rights impacts of fossil fuels.

ABOUT YOU

You will have a passion for human rights and proven experience researching climate crisis’s, while being able to confidently analyse and report on findings. You will also have experience guiding and undertaking research field trips, working collaboratively and representing organisations.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Specialist knowledge and professional experience in the thematic area in your brief, namely climate justice with a particular focus on human rights-consistent transition to zero-carbon economies, human rights impacts of fossil fuels and an understanding of the nature of key human rights concerns, as well as the relevant political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues.
  • Expert knowledge of the international human rights legal framework, particularly with respect to climate change and, ideally economic, social and cultural rights, and relevant developments, gained through significant experience working within or on the sector.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop policy positions based on a detailed understanding of human rights principles and Amnesty’s core values as well ability to exercise sound political judgement.
  • Experience of interviewing and dealing in an appropriate manner with witnesses and survivors of human rights violations, as well as with senior government officials, policy makers, and law enforcement officials.
  • Outstanding written and verbal English is essential; in addition, the ability to work to a high professional level in another widely-used language, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic, will be an advantage.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and conduct research and analysis on human rights and the climate crisis in order to provide timely, accurate, independent and impartial assessments and recommendations to the IS and the wider movement, with a particular focus on harmful government policies and company operations; global and local human rights impacts of fossil fuels and a just and human rights-consistent transition to zero-carbon economies.
  • Develop knowledge and provide expert advice within the organisation on issues within the post’s thematic brief, in particular just and human rights-consistent transition to zero-carbon economies. This will include carrying out analysis for advocacy and campaigning of priority national/regional energy-related and just transition laws and policies.
  • Write or contribute to the drafting of timely and effective reports, briefings, position papers, correspondence, action materials, press releases, and other internal and external documents in order to implement AI’s agreed strategies.
  • Organize and undertake field research trips, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of relevant human rights concerns, including in response to crisis situations; prepare, where necessary, security assessments.
