An exciting opportunity to manage the Research team of the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, a leading international NGO working in Geneva, Switzerland.

What we are looking for

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) is seeking a highly qualified, experienced and dynamic Research Manager to lead IDMC’s qualitative and quantitative research work and provide actionable evidence to guide action on internal displacement in affected countries.

More about IDMC’s Research team

IDMC’s Research team is currently made up of one Researcher and two Research Associates who produce qualitative and quantitative evidence, analyses and recommendations on the drivers, patterns and impacts of internal displacement linked with conflicts, violence, disasters and climate change. The team works on several projects investigating internal displacement’s consequences on the economy and on different groups of people (women, children, older people, people with disabilities…) and different ways to prevent and address internal displacement through better support and solutions. IDMC’s research is intended to be accessible for non-specialists, governments in affected countries and their humanitarian and development partners, operational actors and policy makers who can make a difference in affected people’s lives with better information on how to achieve greater impact.

What you will do

1. In close collaboration with the Head of Programmes, oversee and guide the thematic research agenda of IDMC, revising as required existing research programmes and developing new ones to better support policies and programmes on internal displacement.

2. Lead research on the socioeconomic impacts of internal displacement and other key projects, including the identification of research questions, methodologies, and relationships with external partners.

3. Oversee budget planning and monitoring for the thematic research team, including supporting the team members in developing proposals and reporting to donors.

4. Supervise the work of team members, including administrative and Human Resources procedures, regular performance, development and work planning meetings, coordination of resources within the team to ensure timely delivery of products and a reasonable workload for team members.

5. Serve as focal point for the rest of the Programmes team, External Relations team, Communications team and Director’s Office for updates and knowledge exchange, ensuring all are informed of the research team’s work and collaborate effectively.

6. Support the Head of Programmes, the Director’s Office and External Relations department in identifying and promoting products and services that IDMC can offer to governments and other actors working on internal displacement.

What you will bring

• At least 7 years of professional experience in related fields.

• Experience supervising staff and coordinating teamwork.

• Proven ability to connect and work through disparate and complex development problems through clear analysis and conceptual framing.

• Knowledge of human mobility issues in the context of conflict, generalised violence, disasters and climate change, or development

• Experience of working with a diversity of institutions in different regional contexts, including universities, UN agencies, NGOs, national research institutes, and at different levels of seniority

• Ability and desire to develop networks and engage with new partners

• Experience of analyzing socio-economic and environmental conditions in different country contexts

What we offer

  • Duty station: Geneva, Switzerland
  • Contract: national contract, 12 months (extension possible, dependent on funding)
  • Travel: up to 25%
  • Salary/benefits: grade 9 on NRC’s Geneva Office salary scale, with accompanying terms and conditions
