Awareness Against Human Trafficking

Awareness Against Human Trafficking (HAART), is a non-governmental organization based in Nairobi and dedicated to fighting human trafficking in Eastern Africa. HAART works through a multi-disciplinary approach applying the UN Four P’s Strategy to combat trafficking in persons: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Policy and Partnership. HAART is one of the key counter-trafficking organizations in Kenya addressing the issue of human trafficking by supporting the people most affected by it and also developing best practices in the movement.

HAART Kenya is currently recruiting for the position of a Research Lead Consultant. The Research Lead Consultant shall provide guidance and coordination for implementing the project. He/she will be responsible to develop a work plan and coordinate the project.

Project Title: Reducing vulnerability to human trafficking through safe migration. The case of conflict affected the population of Marsabit County, Kenya.

Job Information Location: Nairobi. The job will also involve travel to various counties in Kenya

He/She will be reporting to the CEO of HAART Kenya.

1. Project Background

The project intends to provide qualitative and quantitative data on the correlation between migration and reduction of vulnerability to human trafficking linked to violent conflict that will be visualized for the purpose of dissemination and training.

2. Scope of work

The successful candidate will be expected to be available immediately and for the duration of the project. The work will involve travel to various counties in Kenya which are among the study areas. The lead consultant will be expected to: develop mixed methods research tools, undertake training for research assistants, conduct pretest, analyse primary data collected by research assistants, research and analyze the existing secondary data on the topic, develop a first draft based on the collected data, conduct validation meetings, incorporate feedback from stakeholders, develop and submit the final draft report. The Lead Consultant should have previous experience in undertaking research, the ability to work rapidly and in coordination with the research team.

3. Specific tasks and deliverables

Phase one: Conducting a desk research for the study by use of secondary data

Phase two: Developing methodology by using data collection tools that shall involve both the qualitative (questionnaires and key informant interviews) and quantitative data. Developing tools and training for research assistants and conducting pre-test exercises.

Phase three: Collection of quantitative and qualitative data using inferential and descriptive tools of data collection

Phase four: Analysis of the data based on the findings from the collection of data conducted. The data analyzed shall be findings from both the qualitative and quantitative data collection. A draft report shall be written and drafted.

Phase five: Verification and validation of findings collected and analyzed so as to inform the outcomes of the study findings.

Phase six: A final report shall be written and drafted. The output of the consultancy will be the Final Research Report in English.

4. Duration of the assignment

The assignment is scheduled to take 20 working days per month i.e. between the date of signing the Agreement between HAART Kenya and the awarded Consultant and the date of provision of the final report.

Experience and Qualification

  • The ideal candidate(s) should possess post graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline such as, Sociology, Psychology, Community development, Peace and security, Migration or any relevant social science discipline.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in conducting research with a strong bias on migration.
  • Experience in working with migrants.
  • Demonstrate track record of delivering migration programs. The consultant should provide evidence of previous works in similar assignments.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Swahili language.
  • Be able to work independently within stipulated timelines.
  • For consultancy firms, one should have a legal status, a company profile, and tax registration.

Key Skills and Competences

  • A solid understanding of best practices in research, data collection, management and analysis.
  • Ability to interact and have good interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to package information, make good presentations to meet the needs of the audience
  • Ability to adapt to emerging situations and coordinate different teams working on the research.
