Position Details

Summary of Duties:

The cherry breeding program at WSU-IAREC is seeking a candidate to assist with plant propagation and greenhouse management, research orchard and orchard maintenance, and harvest, as well as working on collaborative research projects with other scientists at WSU. This position is expected to work independently, with minimal supervision. Primary duties include budding and grafting for propagation, monitoring the health of greenhouse, screenhouse and outdoor plantings to identify problems such as diseases and insect pests and taking appropriate control measures. The incumbent will participate in general program activities including plant propagation and general plant care. Field activities include planting, training, pruning, identification and analysis of superior seedling trees, harvest, trellis maintenance, irrigation system maintenance, overseeing or performing pesticide and fertilizer applications, and plant removal. The incumbent will also assist with collaborative plant pathology projects focused on X-disease and little cherry, propagating, maintaining, and measure effects on greenhouse and field-grown plants. Finally, the successful candidate will also assist with plant propagation, maintenance, and pesticide applications for the Clean Plant Center Northwest.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain at the time of hire, a valid unrestricted driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree
  • One year experience in relevant research field of study

Monthly Salary: $3,649.47 – $4,450.57

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
