Job Purpose and Background:

As Research Fellow – Power Sector Transformation, you will join a team of passionate individuals from CDP, WRI, WWF, and the UN Global Compact developing the global standard for science-based emissions reduction targets (SBTs). In this position, you will co-author a research report outlining the mitigation challenges, opportunities, and demands faced by the power sector, and what they imply for power sector SBTs. Special attention will be paid to how power sector businesses vary across subsectors, regions, and countries. Your fellowship will entail a combination of desk research, quantitative analysis, creative problem-solving, feedback collection, and writing.

Key responsibilities include:

● Coordinate and conduct research to understand the mitigation challenges, opportunities, and demands faced by the power sector to align with the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement

● Produce a clear explanation of how power sector businesses vary across subsectors, regions, and countries, and what these differences imply for SBTs

● Develop a feedback survey for SBTi stakeholders to contribute their insights

● Co-author a research report that will help the SBTi update power sector target-setting criteria, GHG accounting guidance, and methods

● Assist the Research & Technical Development Team with ad-hoc tasks such as collecting and organizing data from various sources

Essential qualifications:

● Completed Bachelor’s in environmental studies, civil engineering, electrical engineering, energy systems, or a related field (at the time of fellowship start)

● Demonstrated interest in energy systems and climate change mitigation

● Academic or professional experience conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses

● Detail-oriented, organized, and independent thinker

● Excellent research and writing skills

● Fluency in English required

*All candidates must be legally allowed to work in the US. The SBTi cannot at the moment sponsor working visas.

Desirable qualifications:

● Pursuing or completed Master’s degree in environmental studies, civil engineering, electrical engineering, energy systems, or a related field

● Proven understanding of the global or U.S. domestic energy system

● Experience with or exposure to survey design

Compensation:

The pay range for this fellowship opportunity is between $15-18/hour, commensurate with qualifications.

Duration and location:

● This is a 30 hours per week, 5- 7 month fellowship with flexible start and end dates based on the research fellow’s availability and project requirements

● Main fellowship term: May – September/November 2022

● This is a remote-based fellowship with the possibility of visiting the New York office for working once it reopens
