Job Purpose and Background:

As Research Fellow – General, you will join a team of passionate individuals from CDP, WRI, WWF, and the UN Global Compact developing the global standard for science-based emissions reduction targets (SBTs). This position is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in environmental stewardship who is interested in using science to drive action in line with the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement.

Our research aims to improve the coverage and effectiveness of SBT-setting approaches through academic engagement, diligent testing/analysis, and multi-stakeholder feedback. You will be assigned to a project based primarily on the needs of the SBTi, as well as consideration of your interests and previous experience.

Key responsibilities include:

● Coordinate and conduct research on your assigned projects

● Assist the Research & Technical Development Team with tasks such as collecting and organizing data from various sources, evaluating proposed research, and contributing to research methodology decisions

● Contribute written and graphic content to briefings, reports and presentations

● Summarize incoming reports and articles for team members on the SBTi

● Organize information and research for external audiences

Essential qualifications:

● Completed Bachelor’s in environmental studies, civil engineering, electrical engineering, energy systems, climate/earth science, or a related field (at the time of fellowship start)

● Demonstrated interest in climate change mitigation

● Demonstrated interest in business climate action, climate targets, or the energy system

● Academic or professional experience conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses

● Detail-oriented, organized, and independent thinker

● Excellent research and writing skills

● Fluency in English required

*All candidates must be legally allowed to work in the US. The SBTi cannot at the moment sponsor working visas.

Desirable qualifications:

● Pursuing or completed Master’s degree in environmental studies, civil engineering, electrical engineering, energy systems, climate/earth science, or a related field

● Proven understanding of business climate action, climate targets, or the energy system

● Experience with or exposure to survey design

Compensation:

The pay range for this fellowship opportunity is between $15-18/hour, commensurate with qualifications.

Duration and location:

● This is a 30 hours per week, 5-7 month fellowship with flexible start and end dates based on the research fellow’s availability and project requirements

● Main fellowship term: May – September/November 2022

● This is a remote-based fellowship with the possibility of visiting the New York office for working once it reopens.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.
