Job Summary

The Laboratory of Dr. Douglas Allan, in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia, is looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 4 to join their team as soon as possible, preferably before May 2022.

The predominant roles of this position are to perform advanced molecular biology strategies, perform protein and nucleic acid biochemistry techniques, work with cell lines and reporter assays, and maintain lab reagents and ordering.

Organizational Status

The Research Assistant/Technician 4 will report directly to the PI, Dr. Douglas Allan. Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively as a member of this multidisciplinary team.

Work Performed

  • Design and construct homology-directed repair templates for genome editing in Drosophila by CRISPR/Cas9-based methods.
  • Perform next-generation sequencing related technologies, such as RNA-seq, ChIP-Seq, ATAC-seq.
  • Utilize numerous common biochemical methods, including western blotting, protein isolation and electrophoretic mobility shift assays.
  • Work with cell lines (insect and human) including performance of luciferase reporter assays.
  • All the above require the ability to design complex cloning strategies and be capable of independent troubleshooting in these methods.
  • Maintain lab stocks of molecular biology and biochemistry reagents.
  • Plan and perform experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques.
  • Develop and write novel protocols and safety procedures.
  • Manage and oversee the daily operations and finances of the laboratory, including responsibility for budget, purchase recommendations, and inventory.
  • Develop operating procedures and make recommendation on workflow improvements.
  • Provide instruction and training in the use of specialized techniques and equipment.
  • Research and determine the applicability of new technology and systems related to work.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technician or equivalent technical experience (M.Sc. or Ph.D. level) with at least 5 years’ experience in complex molecular biology and biochemistry applications.
  • Must have proven experience working in a dynamic team environment.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills and ability to maintain the inventory of supplies for the laboratory.
  • Experience working in genetic models (such as Drosophila, C.elegans or yeast), or expertise in genomics or molecular genetic manipulation of cells/organoids.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who also have demonstrable computational or bioinformatics expertise.
