Job Summary
The laboratory of Dr. Douglas Allan, in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of British Columbia, is looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 3 to join their team as soon as possible, preferably before May 2022.
The predominant roles of this position are to perform advanced molecular biology strategies, perform protein and nucleic acid biochemistry techniques, work with cell lines and reporter assays, and maintain lab reagents, ordering and finances.
Organizational Status
The Technician will report directly to Dr. Douglas Allan. Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively as a member of this multidisciplinary team.
Work Performed
- Plan and perform molecular biology strategies to construct plasmids (including transgenes) using methods that include site directed mutagenesis, Gibson Assembly and Gateway-related technologies.
- Perform next-generation sequencing related technologies, such as RNA-seq, ChIP-Seq, ATAC-seq.
- Utilize numerous common biochemical methods, including western blotting, protein isolation and electrophoretic mobility shift assays.
- Work with cell lines (insect and human) including performance of luciferase reporter assays.
- All the above require the ability to solve complex cloning strategies and be capable of troubleshooting in these methods.
- Maintain lab stocks of all molecular biology and biochemistry reagents.
- Oversee lab ordering and finances.
- Plan and perform experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to maintain a high standard of work with consistent communication between team members and the supervisors will result in delays and quality of research output, which will impact the working conditions, reputation, and funding for the research group and UBC. N ew or unusual problems are referred to supervisor.
