Research Assistant – COVID – 19 Study – 5 Positions

BACKGROUND

Global Programs for Research and Training is registered as an international NGO in Kenya, wholly owned and affiliated to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

The Ministry of Health – Division of Disease Surveillance and Response, (DDSR) University of California San Francisco – Global Programs, and Centers for Disease Control are conducting a surveillance study to determine the prevalence of co-morbidities among COVID-19 patients admitted in selected public health facilities in Kenya.

Global Programs for Research and Training is seeking qualified research assistants to conduct this study. These positions will require one-month commitment, with the potential for extension at the end of the period, subject to funding availability.

The Research Assistants will work under the direct supervision of the study coordinator and overall supervision of the principal investigators.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Attend the scheduled training to clearly understand the purpose of the study and how they will be involved in the study
  • Conduct data abstraction from in-patient medical files into study specific electronic data abstraction tools
  • Uphold data quality procedures throughout the study
  • Ensure data is collected safely and transmitted to the designated central location
  • Act as the point of contact to respond to any data quality and management concerns related to the abstraction of in-patient medical files for COVID-19 in-patients
  • Provide routine progress reports to the study coordinator
  • Perform other duties and assignments assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in a health-related field; those with experience in directly supporting COVID-19 in-patients will have an added advantage
  • Experience in collecting quantitative data or abstracting data from existing records in a health facility is key
  • Experience in electronic collection of public health data; experience in using ODK is key
  • Knowledge and understanding of public health issues, specifically regarding COVID-19
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well within the public health system/facilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft office and strong typing skills
  • Fluency in English or Swahili
  • Willingness to be based in Kilifi for the duration of the research project
  • Experience in in-patient clinical practice
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision.
