ABOUT THE ROLE

Amnesty International is recruiting a quantitative Research Adviser to join the Research and Advocacy Programme in Amnesty International’s International Secretariat. As one of the key positions in the organization with a quantitative research brief, we are looking for a motivated and creative researcher, well equipped to address human rights research challenges through data analysis and modelling.

JOB PURPOSE

To help guide Amnesty International’s use of quantitative evidence, data, and analysis; provide oversight and guidance on the use of given data, and provide research quality assurance for claims of prevalence, claims that are quantitative in nature, or that rely on statistical analyses. To assist with the creation of standards and practices with AI’s research to ensure rigor, transparency, and accuracy, to include the creation and/or delivery of guidelines, toolkits, or training curricula. To lead, co-lead, or support on specific research projects or investigations, and to help ensure the long-term sustainability of quantitative approaches to human rights defence.

ABOUT YOU

You should apply for this position if you have knowledge of research methodologies and of the design, implementation and evaluation of research projects. Ideally, you will have advanced qualification in a social or natural science using quantitative reasoning; otherwise, advanced qualification in data science with experience in the application of quantitative methods in human rights, development, law enforcement, or other public interest.

Experience in the practical application of regression or classification modelling is essential. Experience designing and delivering training or instruction related to quantitative reasoning, statistics, probability, data collection, or modelling is ideal. Experience in employing non-traditional (non-testimonial) approaches to investigations and fact finding, such as the use of technical, scientific, and forensic techniques, is desirable.

Excellent political judgement, experience of managing conflicting demands, meeting deadlines, and adjusting priorities is a must, as is the ability and willingness to travel to Amnesty regional offices in the Americas, Asia or Africa as required (subject to Covid-19 related travel restrictions and risks permitting).

Excellent and demonstrated oral and written communication skills in English, with experience drafting and presenting policy or research outputs is ideal, and working ability in other languages such as Spanish or French is an advantage.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

As the Research Adviser for Quantitative Evidence and Analysis, your main responsibilities will be to: Advise, train, and mentor research staff in the IS and in AI Sections on the use of quantitative evidence, and quantitative analysis; lead or support specific research projects or investigations, and contribute to quality control of AI materials, including through advising on the analysis and presentation of research findings and the formulation of recommendations, and by acting as reviewer of IS and Section documents with quantitative dimensions; develop and implement standards and procedures for research staff to follow, including through devising research policy and guidelines, in order to strengthen the overall quality of AI’s research.

Explore the possibility of the creation of datasets, indicators, or other novel representations of human rights for long term investment; help secure data and data access for useable purposes in research, including through open-source research, advising on the transformation or merging of existing data or datasets, or the development of data collection projects; provide quantitative analyses or descriptive statistics (or assess the rigor of provided analyses or statistics); assist on the creation of expositional/representational quantitative data or human rights finds with statistical dimensions; identify institutional training needs, and develop and deliver a rolling training program and related materials for IS staff and sections; and represent AI externally, including in contacts with NGOs, IGOs, and academic and policy research institutes.
