2.0 Organizational Background
NairoBits Trust is a Kenyan non-profit that uses ICT to deliver socio-economic transformation for communities in under-resourced areas. NairoBits has a wide array of offerings that promote high-impact careers and solutions in the tech space through technology training & innovation, building the acumen of community members, cross-border exchange of talent and ideas, and opening opportunities for beneficiaries. NairoBits offers programming for underprivileged communities across different levels with a major target on young people and other marginalized groups. Since its inception, over 2 decades ago, the organization has impacted the lives of over 100,000 individuals and continues to make tech accessible as a life-changing and solution-building tool in the lives of vulnerable people.
3.0 Objective
To deliver on its mandate, NairoBits recognizes the role of communication – online & offline – in promoting effective programming, resource mobilization and general administration of the organization. The consultancy role is set to audit communications at NairoBits Trust as it is currently set up and create a strategy for better communication that aligns with the NairoBits Trust Vision and Mission. Under the direction of the Communications Department, the Consultant will offer assistance in developing an executable communication and marketing strategy, as well as its implementation framework that captures the dynamic and futuristic nature of the organization whilst also keeping an eye on how the Organization’s partners and other networks relate to it. The consultant shall also build the capacity of the communications department to deliver on the strategy.
4.0 Scope of the Assignment
The scope of the assignment is as follows:
- Understand the organization; its programmes and administrative structures
- Audit the (online and offline, internal and external) communication and knowledge management operations of the organization.
- Create a communications and marketing strategy with a clear implementation plan that responds to the needs of the organization, and targets a diverse range of audience members.
- Build the capacity of the communications department to implement the strategy effectively.
- Handhold the communications department during the implementation of the communications strategy for a mutually agreeable post-consultancy duration.
5.0 Deliverables
The following deliverables will be expected from the consultant;
- Inception Report – At the beginning of the contract with a co-created methodology.
- Communications Audit Report – Status of current communication operations plus preliminary recommendations on scope and key areas of improvement.
- A Communications and Marketing Strategy – A robust strategy that should include communication objectives, a central thesis, internal and external audience segmentation, disseminating avenues, a breakdown of the communication products, as well as a budget and implementation schedule.
- Communication Products by segment, including visual identity, leaflets, brochures, testimonials, slide decks, infographics, and other products identified in the communication strategy and plan.
6.0 Timeline
This expected consultancy period is approximately 6 months, and is envisioned to allow for co-working between the consultant(s) and the relevant staff at NairoBits Trust. Ideally, the consultancy work is expected to begin on 1st November, 2022, with the final product – a final revised and updated communication and marketing strategy manual – to be submitted by 1st April 2023.
7.0 Profile of the Consultant
The Consultant should have the following desired minimum qualifications:
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field from a recognized institution of higher education/learning.
- Experience: At least 5 years of professional experience in the fields of communications and brand management, with proven experience in strategic communications, content writing, and content editing.
- Versatility and Current: Ability to navigate, deploy and keep abreast with frontier communication, knowledge, trends and tools etc.
- Strategic Communication: Excellent track record of achievement in strategic communication implementation, including engagement with national and international media and designing and executing advocacy campaigns with good knowledge of communication and/or information management principles.
- Development Communication: Experience working with an NGO and the ability to curve a niche around development communication is desirable.
