Position Title: Renewable Energy Data Specialist

Reports to: Senior Advisor Climate Science and Energy Policy

Location: Flexible

Capacity: 100% of time worked

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:

The Climate Action Network (CAN) is a global network of more than 1800 civil society organisations in over 130 countries driving collective and sustainable action to fight the climate crisis and to achieve social and racial justice. CAN convenes and coordinates its members, namely, International Members and regional and national nodes to achieve this. CAN is an accredited observer in the UNFCCC and convenes its members to achieve maximum impact in this process and other relevant multilateral processes.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The CAN Secretariat developed a global Platform of Action (PoA) for renewables, focusing on wind, solar, geothermal and the necessary infrastructure to accelerate a clean energy revolution to keep the global temperature below 1.5°C. We aim to cut fossil fuel emissions to zero, ideally before 2050.

CAN also houses the coordination of the Big Shift Global (BSG) campaign to shift public finance out of fossil fuels and into sustainable renewable energy to ensure energy access for all. This campaign is closely aligned with the work of the PoA and the data expert position will also support the work of this campaign.

To achieve our objectives more effectively, we are looking for a committed, engaged renewable energy data specialist to join our diverse and international team.

This will be a remote and full-time position. The contract duration is for one-year initially and is potentially renewable. The CAN renewable energy data specialist will be in charge of the following tasks:

  • Work closely with the PoA, members of BSG and CAN Secretariat communication team;
  • Assist and coordinate members, working groups and regional CAN nodes on supporting renewables;
  • Support the PoA team with the required data to support advocacy efforts around renewables;
  • Develop an annual Renewable Energy Ambition Tracker (a scoring system) for key countries based on equitable criteria for deploying, financing and legislating renewables;
  • Assist some selected CSO and CAN nodes in data analysis of appropriate parameters of their regional, national renewable energy sector;
  • Work with partners and allies on promotion of the data analysis and its conclusions;
  • Promote publicly the products and analysis by PoA, BSG and others as appropriate;
  • Develop and manage a database of renewables data and work in collaboration with other CSO partners and industry associations to co-create content that can be used for RE advocacy;
  • Designing, executing and strengthening systems and processes required for data analysis.

Education and professional qualifications:

  • University or other education in ITC and data analysis & management

Job-related experience & knowledge:

  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in data management and analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of ethics and compliance standards for non-profits.
  • Excellent numerical, analytical and programmatic computer skills with good attention to detail.
  • Experience with advanced statistical methods will be a bonus.
  • Knowledge and experience to extract renewable energy or other energy data.
  • Ability to design compelling graphics for media and social media.
  • Basic understanding of NGO priorities on renewables, energy and climate policy.
  • Ability to communicate complex, technical or data-related issues in creative, simple terms.
  • Some basic knowledge on renewable energy scenarios and analysis like those from REN21, IEA, IRENA.

IT Skills and requirements:

  • Computer skills: advanced competence in MS Office & project management tools
  • Ability to coordinate meetings and work plans in a virtual environment and using digital tools

Language ability:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required
  • Any additional language will be an advantage

Travel:

  • Ability to travel internationally frequently as required
