Position Title: Renewable Energy Communicator

Reports to: Senior Advisor Climate Science and Energy Policy

Location: Flexible

Capacity: 100% of time worked

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:

The Climate Action Network (CAN) is a global network of more than 1800 civil society organisations in over 130 countries driving collective and sustainable action to fight the climate crisis and to achieve social and racial justice. CAN convenes and coordinates its members, namely, International Members and regional and national nodes to achieve this. CAN is an accredited observer in the UNFCCC and convenes its members to achieve maximum impact in this process and other relevant multilateral processes.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The CAN Secretariat developed a global Platform of Action (PoA) for renewables, focusing on wind, solar, geothermal and the necessary infrastructure to ensure that the clean energy revolution underway keeps the global temperature below 1.5°C. We aim to cut fossil fuel emissions to zero, ideally before 2050.

CAN also houses the coordination of the Big Shift Global (BSG) campaign to shift public finance out of fossil fuels and into sustainable renewable energy to ensure energy access for all. This campaign is closely aligned with the work of the PoA and the communications position will support the work of this campaign.

To achieve our objectives more effectively, we are looking for a committed, engaged renewable energy communicator to join our diverse and international team.

This will be a remote and full time position. The contract duration is for one-year initially and potentially renewable. The CAN renewable energy communicator will be in charge of the following tasks:

  • Work closely with the PoA, members of BSG and CAN Secretariat communication team;
  • Assist and coordinate members, working groups and regional CAN nodes on communicating on renewables;
  • Work closely with communication experts from partner organizations and transform technical and scientific information to accessible language to reach wider audiences;
  • Support BSG to move public energy funding by the International Finance Institutions (IFI) to renewables;
  • Develop a proactive communication strategy for media on renewables, prioritising developing countries and access to clean renewables;
  • Promote publicly the products and analysis by PoA, BSG and others as appropriate;
  • Develop and manage a database of media focusing on renewables
  • Develop a compelling digital and social media strategy to promote renewable energy as a core solution to the climate crisis and other inequalities

Education and professional qualifications:

  • Equivalent academic/vocational experience in journalism, media or communications

Job-related experience & knowledge:

  • Excellent communication and coordination skills with good attention to detail;
  • Excellent knowledge of social media platforms and tactics;
  • Fluent in English, writing and speaking;
  • Basic understanding of NGO priorities on renewables, energy and climate policy;
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in media and/or journalism work in any organisation;
  • Some basic knowledge on renewable energy scenarios and analysis like those from REN21, IEA, IRENA;
  • Knowledge of communication tools like Mailchimp, WordPress and social media tools and basic design and photo editing skills on Photoshop and Adobe will be an advantage

Job-related skills/abilities:

  • Ability to design documents and compelling graphics for media and social media
  • Ability to communicate complex or technical issues in creative, simple terms
  • Ability to develop press released and write clearly for diverse audiences.
  • Organised and able to work to manage tasks and meet deadlines
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively in different socio-cultural contexts, good listener, facilitator and consensus-builder;
  • Ability to take initiative, and to work independently and proactively;
  • Ability to work remotely as part of a diverse and international team;
  • Strong identification with CAN’s values including but not limited to transparency, honesty, inclusiveness, empathy, solidarity and respect.

IT Skills and requirements:

  • Computer skills: advanced competence in MS Office & project management tools
  • Ability to coordinate meetings and work plans in a virtual environment and using digital tools

Language ability:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required
  • Any additional language will be an advantage

Travel:

  • Ability to travel internationally frequently as required
