Position: Regional Safeguarding Associate, Africa, BRAC International

Job Location: BRAC International Ghana/ Sierra Leone/ Liberia

About the Role:

The Regional Safeguarding Associate will be one of the members of BRAC International’s safeguarding team who will uphold our responsibilities to the vulnerable adults and children participating in our programmes, create a safe working environment for our staff and associated personnel, and help to ensure all those involved in our work uphold the highest ethical standards and are safeguarded against any form of harassment, exploitation and abuse.

This role will support the safeguarding activities led by Country Offices in BRAC’s Africa region, with a key focus on the Accelerating Impact for Young Women in Africa (AIM) programme. Responsibilities include; supporting the roll-out of Safeguarding policy training in all the countries of BRAC Africa region, particularly across field offices in each country; supporting the development of training modules; tracking the training completion log for reporting to BI HQ; ensuring all cases are logged correctly on the Orbit incident reporting system supporting the countries in case management process and ensuring timely reporting of incidents to donors, BI Head Office and BI affiliates, tracking progress of investigations, implementation of disciplinary actions and survivor support, prioritizing the AIM programme.

The incumbent shall represent BRAC Africa Region in Safeguarding networks within Africa region and other relevant external forums, conduct needs assessment and training for country office capacity development and support the preparation of high-quality communications and reports for various mediums such as the organizational Annual Report, reports for the AIM project, and others as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support country teams to conduct safeguarding risk assessment and integrate safeguarding measures in programmes; and operations with support from the BRAC International Regional / Head Office Safeguarding unit;
  • supporting the roll-out of Safeguarding policy training in all the countries of BRAC Africa region, particularly across field offices in each country;
  • supporting the development of training modules
  • Support country teams on case management of safeguarding violations ensuring that BRAC meets its donor obligations to report safeguarding violations without delay;
  • Support capacity strengthening of staff to conduct sensitive investigations and produce high quality investigation reports;
  • Support country teams to ensure organizational reporting and response mechanisms are functional, practical and community-friendly;
  • Support country teams in the process of mapping and updating local support services available to survivors where programmes operate, prioritizing the AIM project;
  • Review the online safeguarding case management system, following up with country teams on incidents submitted and ensure actions are implemented in a timely fashion;
  • Review monitoring and audit review findings for the Africa Region and support the country teams to address gap areas;
  • Support the annual safeguarding budgeting process for the BRAC Africa Region
  • Participate in program design meetings and kick-off workshops to facilitate inclusion of risks, planning, and strategy with regard to safeguarding;
  • Represent BRAC Africa Region at external meetings (i.e., Safeguarding cluster/network groups)
  • Support in the compilation of reports to the Regional SMT for decision-making.

Academic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Gender and Women’s Studies, Development Studies, International Development, Anthropology, or any relevant discipline

Required Skills, Competencies & Knowledge:

  • Excellent conceptual and analytical skills with regards to safeguarding
  • Experience of providing technical guidance and supportive supervision to a large geographically dispersed team
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding policies and international standards and best practices
  • Ability to build trust among stakeholders and maintain the highest level of integrity, confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Experience of supporting complex and sensitive safeguarding investigations
  • Ability to work strategically with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills
  • Capable of working both individually and as part of a team
  • Excellent relationship management skills and ability to communicate in all forms (written, verbal, negotiation, presentation skills)
  • Ability to prioritize and deal with competing demands to deliver results.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
  • Excellent Excel and PowerPoint skills

Experience Requirements:

  • 4 years of experience in the development or humanitarian sector
  • 3 years of experience working in the areas of safeguarding, protection, gender or GBV in any reputed organization
